Mission Mountain UltraPort 2P Tent Pro Review (Incredible Price and Unique Tent)

Last Modified: 05/26/2024

The Mission Mountain UltraPort 2P Tent Pro is freestanding and completely unique with its floored vestibules, supported with aluminum poles and suitable for a three-season camping. The price of the tent is hard to match.

Key features & benefits

  • Unique design.
  • Freestanding
  • Two doors.
  • Two floored vestibules.
  • Aluminum poles.
  • Huge waterproof rating.
  • Three fly vents.
  • Compact.
  • Incredible price.

What is in the name

This Mission Mountain UltraPort Tent Pro is a two-person dome-type tent with a unique design as you will realize from its features. The picture below shows the tent without the fly so that you better see its construction.

The tent without the fly.
The tent without the fly.

The phrase UltraPort is most likely used to describe the fact that the tent is quite compact for transportation, but it is not ultra light, more below.

The word Pro is far from obvious, I can only guess that this is about its advanced design and great materials. In any case, this is a double layer and fully freestanding tent, and this is achieved due to its clever design.

The inner tent is with two huge doors, and they are visible in the picture above. So each of the users has its own access side, and this is all under a full-coverage fly that creates two vestibules.

Floored vestibules

This is a great detail, there are two extensions of the inner tent’s floor, and they create a dry hexagonal platform together with the inner tent’s floor. The parts under the vestibules are triangle in shape, with around 24 inches (60 cm) depth. The same design you can see also in the KAZOO Outdoor Camping Tent Venus 2 Person.

This adds to the functionality of the tent in the following sense:

  • You can store your gear under the vestibules, like backpacks and other stuff, and it will be separated and protected from the wet and muddy ground.
  • These two floor extensions also double as attachment points for the third pole which they added so that the vestibules are supported, see the picture. This detail makes the tent freestanding even when the fly is on, and this is quite a rare feature.
The third pole attaches to the vestibule floor.

Below you can see how this looks when the fly is on; I have unzipped the vestibule flap and fixed it to the side of the tent:

You can keep one vestibule closed all the time and keep this covered and floored area for storage only.

Materials

All the elements in the package are shown in the picture below:

This includes 12 quality aluminum stakes, the fly, the tent body, the poles, and 6 pre-attached guylines (you will see them later below).

The poles & stakes: There are three poles here and this is a 7001 aluminum alloy. They attach to the tent’s base through the usual grommets.

Grommets for poles attachment to the tent's base, and fly attachment clips.

Higher you have clips, and completely on the top there are very short sleeves. Note that all three poles are identical, so you do not have anything to guess. This is indeed a great detail.

The stakes are of a good quality, I have the same in many of my tents, see them below. I just wonder why they did not make them in the same color as the poles, pity.

The fabric: You have very good materials here. The inner tent’s canopy is a thin 30D breathable taffeta combined with a mesh, and its bathtub floor is a much more durable 150D material.

The fly is a 70D fabric, so this is quite good for such a light backpack. It is huge but attaching is easy, note that it is asymmetric, but here you have color coding.

You can see this in the picture below, so match the two red straps and buckles on the fly with the corresponding red elements at the tent’s base. Nothing to guess, well done.

From their specifications, the waterproof rating is incredible 5000 mm. All seams are taped and you can see this in the picture:

Note that they offer both nylon and polyester options, and the tent is available in green and blue colors. I really like the zippers, they work smooth, and the pulls are in a great color:

Note that on Amazon, the fabric specifications are very different from those available on their site which I mentioned above, so it is far from clear which of them are correct.

Other details

The tent comes with all 6 guylines pre-attached, see one in the picture. But I must say, I would rather have orange color here.

One gigantic wall pocket is there, in fact it is too big to be of any practical use. I hope they will redesign it at some point, perhaps divide into several smaller.

Ventilation

The ceiling of the inner tent is all mesh so vapor can easily escape, and the lower parts are a breathable taffeta. You can see this in the pictures shown above.

When the fly is on, you have no less than three fly vents. Not many tents of this type have such a luxury.

I would say that there is not much to object to this design, the tent has all the elements to deal with condensation and ventilation.

Who is the Mission Mountain UltraPort 2P Tent Pro for

Regarding the best use & climate, this is a typical three-season double-layer tent, with excellent ventilation and very good materials.

The waterproof rating is such that you will never need more, the tent is low-profile and aerodynamic, so you can use it in a variety of outdoor situations.

The picture below shows how it looks when all is closed, so the inner is completely protected under the massive fly. I shall test it in the rain very soon to see if any water gets through those three roof vents that look positioned quite high.

View with closed vestibules.
View with closed vestibules.

Note that I did not use guylines in this picture, the weather was perfect and I only wanted to make pictures. But when they are staked properly, this low-profile tent with its aerodynamic shape will work great anywhere.

One detail I dislike is perhaps visible from the picture below. Namely, if you unzip the vestibules all the way, rain can get into the inner tent in the narrow end area. It is surprising that they did not think about this issue.

View from above.
View from above.

The way to deal with this when it rains and you have to exit the tent, is probably to not unzip completely the upper part of the vestibule zipper. The zippered opening is very long so this is doable, so even if you only party unzip the flap, you can get in and out. I shall test this in my rain testing of the tent.

Regarding the size, the official numbers are given in the pictures below, and the tent is for two people. They do not provide the number for the area, but the floor is tapered, and the actual dimensions are different from those in the pictures.

Official numbers.

From my own measurements the inner floored area is 30 ft² (2.3 m²). The two triangular vestibules add 6.4+ 6.4 ft² (0.6 + 0.6 m²), so the total covered space is around 42.8 ft² (3.5 m²).

This may look good, but note that the width at one end is only 39.4 inches (100 cm), and this means you have to use two narrow and tapered mummy-type sleeping pads. The picture below shows that in the middle of the tent you have the width of around 117 cm only.

The width in the middle area.
The width in the middle area.

On the other hand, the tent is very short, from my measurements you have only around 78.7 inches (200 cm). This means your sleeping bag will be touching the walls even if you are a short person. But if you are tall, better look elsewhere.

Regarding the weight, the tent can be described as moderate, and there is nothing ‘ultra’ here. Though it is light enough to be carried on a shorter tour.

Its weight is close to the OneTigris Cosmitto 2 Person Backpacking Tent, and it is exactly the same as the North Face Stormbreak 2 Person Tent weight.

There are indeed many lighter options on the market, you can compare it with the Klymit Maxfield 2 Tent and Sea to Summit Alto TR2 Tent, but the latter you will pay four times more. More options you can find in my list of best lightweight 2 person backpacking tents.

The packed size is good, and you can see this from the picture below. It measures around (L x D) 17 x 6.7 inches (43 x 17 cm). Note that I rate both the weight and the packed size with respect to the overall protected space.

Very good carry bag with compression straps.
Very good carry bag with compression straps.

The carry bag is with two compression straps, in addition to a carry strap and a cinch cord on the side. There is no zipper so this can never fail, a great design. It is made large so it is very easy to store the pack inside of it.

It is small enough even to be attached on the bottom of my Deuter Futura 50+10 pack shown below. So this tent is indeed backpack portable, but I see it best suited for bicycle and motorbike tours, and you can use it also for car camping.

The tent attached to the bottom of my backpack.

Regarding the price, it is simply incredible, I do not remember any other two-person tent with such features and materials that could come close to it. If you are on a budget, you will hardly find a better value for the money.

Final thoughts & rating

In summary, the Mission Mountain UltraPort 2P Tent Pro offers an innovative design with its freestanding structure and floored vestibules, making it a standout choice for three-season camping.

Its aluminum poles and robust waterproof rating ensure durability and weather resistance. The tent provides excellent ventilation through its three fly vents and breathable materials. However, its limited interior space and short length may be restrictive for taller users.

Overall, the UltraPort 2P Tent Pro is a solid option for budget-conscious campers seeking a compact and well-ventilated quality shelter. While not the lightest in its category, it compensates with unique features like the floored vestibules and a user-friendly setup.

The high-quality materials and clever design choices make it suitable for various outdoor activities, from backpacking to car camping. This the tent offers excellent value for its price, making it a practical choice for those prioritizing functionality and affordability.

I have included it in my list of best two person tents for camping. Fully recommended.
