What this The North Face Stormbreak 2 Tent is about
This tent has been around for a number of years already, but here you have the 2022 version presented. If you have the previous version, then there is no need to buy the new tent, the changes are minimal. All numbers are the same (the weight, area, peak height).
From what I have noticed the only changes worth mentioning are the following:
- The floor material in the new tent has 3000 mm waterproof rating, as compared with 1500 mm in the previous version.
- The previous version has D-shaped doors while the new version is with oval doors.
So this is again a simple dome two-layer tent with a canopy protected with a full-coverage fly that creates two vestibules. There are two doors on the inner tent, and you can see its structure without the fly in the picture:
They describe it as freestanding but this applies only to the inner tent. When you put the fly on, you have to stake out its vestibules to have them functional.
Inside you have a lantern hanging point, and storage pouches are in every corner, see the pictures below.
Materials
The fabric: Here you have a durable canopy which is a 75D polyester taffeta combined with mesh. The rain fly is the same material but with a 1200 mm polyurethane coating.
The floor is a 68D polyester with 3000 mm polyurethane coating. You have fully taped seams, and they claim the fabric is without flame-retardant coatings.
Note that the vestibules are with dual zips on the sides so you can roll the flaps up and fix above the entrance. The inner doors can be unzipped and stored in the pockets on the sides.
The poles: There are two main loops plus two short poles and this is a shock corded aluminum. The picture below shows some details. The short poles pull the doors up and make the side walls vertical for extra volume.
Who is it for
Regarding the best use & climate, you have seen its canopy which is almost all mesh, and you have a full-coverage fly shown in the picture. The support is also excellent. So you have full protection from the rain.
The tent is very aerodynamic and low profile and it should perform great even in windy places. They describe it as a 3-season tent so it can be used that way, but in a cold environment you will not feel great with so much mesh.
On the other hand, there are no fly vents, and this is far from great in a wet and rainy environment. It is hard to know what they were thinking with this.
The flaps on the vestibules can be open half way up for extra ventilation when needed. You can see the yellow loop in the middle of the flap above, so till this point you can roll it up and fix.
Regarding the size, you have a floored area of 30.13 ft² (2.8 m²) so this is large enough for two narrow sleeping pads. The floor plan below shows how this may look with tow people inside. The two vestibules add 9.78 + 9.78 ft² (0.9 + 0.9 m²). So the overall protected space is quite good.
The peak height is 43 inches (109 cm), so it is quite low. But the mentioned brow poles create a larger volume than what you would expect from such a low dome shape.
Regarding the weight, they describe it as a backpacking tent, but its weight is 5 lb 14 oz (2.66 kg). So it may be used for such a purpose, but there are lighter options on the market. You can see them in my list of best lightweight 2 person backpacking tents where this tent is also included.
The packed size is not bad but I would not describe it as super compact. The picture below shows how it looks in its carry bag.
Regarding the price, it is definitely great for a tent with such durable materials, aluminum poles, and from such a brand.

Final thoughts & rating
So this The North Face Stormbreak 2 Person Tent is a budget friendly option with durable materials and quality craftsmanship. It offers 4 pockets in the corners and lots of storage space under its vestibules. Even with two users, you can keep one of the vestibules closed and use as a storage space when this is necessary. This is a great value for the money. Fully recommended.
