Marmot Women’s Ouray 0 Degree Sleeping Bag – Improved Version

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

This Marmot Women’s Ouray 0 Degree Sleeping Bag is a new version of their cold weather and winter sleeping bag with a down fill and excellent features.

Key features & benefits

  • EN tested.
  • Great temperature rating.
  • Two sizes.
  • Down fill.
  • Two zippers.

What this is about

The Marmot Women’s Ouray 0 Degree Sleeping Bag has been on the market for a number of years already, but in 2018 they have modified it and a bit improved. In fact, as of the moment of writing this text, both versions are still available on the market. The changes include:

  • It was in a yellow/orange color and now it is blue.
  • An additional zipper is added and it makes entry, exit, and ventilation easier.
  • The shape and the baffle height were also re-designed.

This is again a mummy-style bag for cold-weather camping and this implies a substantial volume and weight. Although it is improved now, the temperature rating is practically the same.

Who is the Ouray sleeping bag for

Seasons-wise, this is a sleeping bag for late autumn and winter camping. The added short zipper on the other side allows for some ventilation but in general, you would be too warm if you use it in a warmer environment. Note that the EN tested lower limit is -12.3 degrees F, the EN comfort limit is -3.2 degrees F, and the official EN temperature rating is 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C).

Size-wise, they have two lengths but bear in mind that this is a women-specific design and this implies a certain size and girth, and a specific insulation distribution that is different as compared with men’s bags.

Weight-wise, it is certainly heavier than the bags for a less cold environment, and it is also bulkier, set the specification and the comparison table below. But this is expected when you see its temperature rating which should be taken as a reliable information. So this is a bag for any cold-weather outdoor activity, backpacking included.

How is it built

They build it in two sizes regular (R) and long (L) but those are sizes for women. The shell materials are 30D 100% nylon with a durable water-repellent finish, 1.18 oz/yd, and 30D 100% nylon ripstop DWR 1.5 oz/yd. The lining is 30D 100% nylon with DWR and 1.27 oz/yd.

The insulation is 650 fill Power-down with Down Defender, so it is treated for an improved water-resistance. They participate in the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) initiative which guarantees a human treatment for geese and ducks.

You also have a full length locking YKK zipper which is the two-way type and with an anti-snag slider, so you will not find better on the market. One shorter zipper is on the opposite side and you can have some venting with it by making a blanket fold when you feel warm; this is shown in the picture below. The zipper pulls are the glow-in-the-dark type.

I have already mentioned the EN rating and this is something that we as consumers must appreciate. Just to know that not all brands subject their products to such testings. The situation is even worse in the down jackets industry where you normally do not have such certificates. So the rating should be reliable, but the feeling of cold is individual of course. So to be sure, add some 5 – 10 degrees or so to the lower limit. You might want to see a bit more about this issue in my separate text about sleeping bags temperature rating.

The other features are as follows:

  • The foot box is anatomically designed.
  • The bag is with a down-filled collar and with an easy access drawcord.
  • You also have an internal stash pocket.
  • Snagless insulated draft tube is along the main zipper.
  • The design includes ground-level side seams. They use such a design as this apparently increases the thermal efficiency of the bag.
  • Hood drawcord is available.
  • Zipper garage.
  • The bag is with two hang loops.

Marmot Ouray 0 Degree Sleeping Bag vs Competitors

I have decided to show you what you get (and what you lose) if you go for a sleeping bag with a slightly higher temperature rating. So here are two of them, both models for women and with the same fill type. Now you can see how the temperature rating difference of 9 °C affects the packed size and the weight. Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In the summary of this Marmot Women’s Ouray 0 Degree Sleeping Bag review, I would stress that although this is a mummy-style bag, it offers a bit more room to sprawl. You have a lot of space for the head but you can cinch it down when needed. You also have more space above knees so if you are a side sleeper you can tuck your knees up.

This is a top-quality bag but this comes at a price. I have included it in my list of best lightweight winter sleeping bags for camping.

It is a pity they do not make the stuff sack with compression straps, they could really in view of its price. The same is with their Women’s Teton 15 sleeping bag. If you do not compress it drastically, it takes too much space in the pack.

This is an expensive item but if you compare it with some other top brands you will see this is a normal price for such a bag. Please see how I rate it for several parameters used for all bags here in the site:
