If you are on an outdoor trip of a few days you will need something like Deuter ACT Lite 65 10 backpack. Since you are reading this, you must be familiar with backpacking and you surely know this. You will be happy for having every extra cubic centimeter which this great pack provides.
This is a trekking tool for several days’ trip, too big if you are out for one day only. For such shorter adventures, Deuter has smaller versions from the same ACT Lite series. See below some of its basic features.
- Product name: Deuter ACT Lite 65+10 Hiking Backpack
- Amazon price: $209.00 – $234.99 (check the links for updates).
- Place to buy: Amazon.
This rucksack has typical Deuter features which include: mesh side pockets, a bottom compartment for light stuff like sleeping bag, the main big compartment, anatomically shaped aluminum internal X-frame, which provides a great rigidity and transfers the weight down to the hip.

There exists a SL (slim line) version for women, with a shorter torso, with a more narrow space between shoulders harnesses.
The pack has pockets on the hip belt, on both sides. The sternum strap is stretchy, adjustable (movable up and down). There is a sleeve which can be extended up and this gives +10 liters of volume.
Do not forget: check free returns conditions when you purchase the backpack on Amazon.
When you open the lower compartment zip, you will see a divider between the two spaces, with a double zip. So this can be used to get into the main compartment space as well, or to transform the interior into a single huge compartment.
My only reason for not giving the rate 10 is the bottom compartment zip, you can see it on the right. It is a semicircle loop and sometimes it can be annoying to close it and to open it (at least in the case of my own quite old pack). You will this also in the video below, at 7:07. But this is a feature which you will see on practically any type and any brand on the market.
The main compartment is quite big, top-loading, and it contains a hydration sleeve at the back, for a 3 L bladder. The compartment is closed by two drawstring cords with locks, at two different levels, the upper one is at the top of the extendible sleeve (this is what gives extra 10 L volume).
There is a large 28 cm mesh pocket above the lower compartment, with a short strap and buckle to secure it to the pack. There are two mesh pockets, 15 cm, on both sides at the level of the lower compartment. Two loops for ice-axe are on the bottom, two 10-cm cord loops with cord locks higher up. There are 4 more cord loops on the top external pocket. There are several compression straps as well.
The Deuter ACT Lite 65+10 pack is waterproofed inside.
This is a relatively big backpack, so you should know how to properly load it. Use the lower compartment for lighter but bulky stuff, like your sleeping bag. Heavier items, like crampons etc., should be at the bottom of your upper compartment. In such a way they will be above your belt, good for balance and good for your knees.
Take care that your load lifters are properly positioned. Ideally, they should be at some 45 degrees. If they are not tight enough the backpack will hang too far off, not good for balance. If they are too tight, they lift shoulder straps off. See it properly done in the picture here on the right.
But note, this angle will depend on your torso length as compared to the distance between the hip belt to the point where the lifter is attached. In other words, it will depend on the size of the backpack. So experiment a bit and find out what suits you best.

So why Deuter? What is Deuter?
Deuter is a German brand of bags and backpacks, founded in 1898 in Augsburg.
I myself have been using one Deuter backpack in the past 12 years. Yes, you are reading correctly, almost all the mountains described in this site I have climbed carrying my Deuter which you may see in the photo right.
It is perhaps showing a bit of age, but I doubt that I shall need yet another one in this life. My own backpack came with the rain cover, stored in the pocket on the bottom, and it has an expandable top lid, which is good enough even if I stay outdoor overnight.
I just came from El Teide mountain, climbed it for the 5th time. Can you guess what I have been having on my back?
It is good to know that these backpacks have been around since 1898. All started with Hans Deuter when he got an order to make the Bavarian Post Office’s postal bags. So this is a brand that has stood the test of time, it provides reliable German products of a top quality.
A good alternative from the same brand: Deuter Aircontact 65 10 backpack

- Capacity: 65 liters (note, there is expandable top just like in the previous model, hence +10 in its name).
- Colors: Midnight / Ocean.
- Weight: 6 lbs / 2.71 kg.
- VariFlex pivoting hip belt, anatomically shaped.
- Detachable rain cover.
- Anatomically shaped aluminum internal X frame.
- U-shape opening on the back side, for an extra access to the pack; this feature you do not have in the previous model.
- The air ventilation system is a bit different from the first model above, and you will be able to see it in the video below.
Customer reviews for this item are simply wonderful, see some statements below, which I find particularly important:
“My back stayed remarkably cool in the 103-degree temperatures in the bottom of the canyon due to the featured “Aircontact” harness system.”
“The hip belt pivots, my first experience with this feature, and it did very well, allowing for a more natural walking motion. “
“I went out for 3 days camping with my Deuter completely full and it was like I had a feather on my back“.
