Kelty Tallboy 4 Person Tent (Incredible Price)

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

Kelty Tallboy 4 Person Tent comes with a price tag that is hard to match in view of its quality and the brand behind it. This is a simple and easy to use dome structure with one door and one window. Keep reading.

Key features & benefits

  • Very easy to use.
  • Dome-style construction.
  • Fiberglass poles.
  • Very affordable.

What this is about

This Tallboy 4 is a tent from a new series of two tents launched by Kelty. So if you want a real freestanding tent, this is it. You have a dome-style construction and the fly attaches to its corners. This means that you can move it around even after adding the fly. More simple a tent can hardly be, the picture below shows its structure supported by two main poles.

The mentioned fly is a partial coverage type and it attaches to the corners through buckles, so this is both good and bad. The good is that the tent is fully freestanding and you can pitch it anywhere. The bad is that there is no vestibule to store your gear and shoes.

This is a one-room structure with one door, and one window which is a double-layer structure. It is deep under the brim so you can keep it with its mesh layer all the time for better ventilation. Below you can see how the tent looks inside:

For a tent of such a size, you have quite an impressive peak height of 70 inches (178 cm). This together with such a large door and the window makes it pleasant and livable.

Ventilation

The fly is without vents but you do not need them here, the brims on both sides created by the short pole raise the fly and there is an airflow underneath it to reduce condensation. The window is deep under the brim and you can keep it open almost all the time.

There is enough mesh on the inner tent but note that there are no floor vents. But the mesh on the sides should help and you should be fine even if you have to keep the window closed.

Who is it for

Capacity-wise, as you have seen this is a 4-person tent. It provides 56.7 ft² (5.27 m²) of the area, and per person this means 14.3 ft² (1.3 m²). The picture below shows what the manufacturer suggests for using this space with 4 people. It does not look so great to me but it is possible to have 4 pads on the floor.

Climate-wise & seasons-wise, this is a reliable 3-season tent, but I would not use it in a cold environment. Also, in view of its height and the partial coverage fly with brims, it is best to avoid places with strong winds.

Weight-wise, with its packed weight of 11 lb (5 kg) this is not a perfect tent for the trail. If this is what you need, check this list with best 4-person backpacking tents. So use it as a camping tent and for the situations when you do not have to carry it yourself.

The packed size is not bad, the carry bag shown below measures 24 x 10 x 7 inches (61 x 25 x 18 cm) and you can transport on a bicycle, in a kayak, etc.

Materials

The poles

The poles are fiberglass and this is what they call a wrapped fiberglass designed to make them much stronger than standard poles of this material. You have them 3 in total.

The usual color-coding is used here and you realize this from the picture below showing one of the corners with pole’s attachment to the grommet and the fly’s buckle.

The fabric

Thy use the same fabric everywhere, so the floor, fly and the walls are the same 68D polyester with a 1200 mm waterproof rating. The mesh sections are a 40D No-see-um Mesh, and seams are taped. There is not much one could object here. Note that they have the Tallboy 4 Footprint available and you can order it separately.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In summary, if you do not want to spend much and still have a reliable tent from a renown-brand, this Kelty Tallboy 4 Person Tent is the one to consider. This is a very easy to use design and the tent is convenient if you change the place frequently.

Although the floor area is quite small, I have included it in my list of best 4-person car camping tents. Fully recommended.
