Kelty Wireless Tent 4 Person (Incredibly Affordable)

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

This Kelty Wireless Tent 4 Person is from their new incredibly affordable series of freestanding 3-season tents with 2 doors and 2 vestibules. Read more below.

Key features & benefits

  • Incredibly affordable.
  • Freestanding.
  • 2 Doors & 2 vestibules.
  • Quick Corners design.
  • Hybrid fiberglass poles.

What this is about

This Wireless 4 is a mid-size tent from a completely new series that Kelty launched recently. There are also 2-person and 6-person tents in this series. They all share the same features, just the dimensions are different.

So this is a freestanding dome-shaped construction with 2 doors, and supported by two main poles. The fly is a full-coverage type and it creates two identical vestibules. As usual, the vestibules must be staked down to be functional. You can see its structure in the picture below which shows the tent without the fly.

The picture shows that the lower part is all taffeta, and there are no floor vents here. But two vents are on the full-coverage fly, located close to the zippers of the vestibules, you can see one of them in the picture below. So this may help in fighting condensation, and if you need more air circulation, you can keep the inner door partly unzipped.

Note that the peak height is 59 inches (150 cm), so this is not bad, but you have a dome here and the overall volume is not particularly large.

Who is it for

Regarding the area, the tent’s declared capacity is 4 people and the floored area is 59.2 ft² (5.5 m²). So per person this is 14.8 ft² (1.37 m²). The two vestibules provide extra 23.7 ft² (2.2 m²). The picture below shows the floor plan and the most important dimensions.

Obviously there is enough space for 4 users, but if you use it for car camping it is best to downgrade this to 2-3 people maximum. I have such a 4-person tent which I use as a solo tent when I camp close to the car and in official camping places.

Regarding seasons and climate, here you have a 3-season tent with a good waterproof rating and a full fly, so the protection from elements is complete.

It is not particularly tall and it will behave well even in a windy environment. Without floor vents, you might need to keep the inner door unzipped if you camp in a warm environment and it is raining for an extended period of time.

Regarding the weight, with its packed weight of 11 lb 14 oz (5.4 kg) the tent is not particularly light. It is backpack portable but it is better suited for camping at places with a motorized access. The packed size of 24 x 8 x 8 inches (61 x 20 x 20 cm) is such that you can transport it even on a bicycle.

Materials

The poles

There are 3 poles in total, the two mentioned previously support the dome while the third short pole is a ridge pole that makes the sides vertical. This appears to be some Kelty’s innovation with fiberglass, they claim this is a special wrapped fiberglass designed to make them much stronger than standard poles of this material.

The poles’ attachment to the tent is the same designed used in their new Night Owl and Late Start series. This is what they call the Quick Corners construction, see the picture:

The Quick Corner design.
The Quick Corner design.

This is just a wide sleeve that you have in each of the corners, it keeps one end of the pole secure as you move to insert the other end, so it cannot jump out as in the case of standard grommets.

Higher on the tent you have clips to attach the poles to the tent. The picture above also shows the buckle at the corner where you fix the fly.

The fabric

They use a durable 68D PU-coated polyester everywhere. So the fly has 1200 mm waterproof rating, and the walls and floor are with 1800 mm, the upper inner tent is a 40D No-see-um Mesh. All seams are taped.

Other features

  • Kelty’s Shark Mouth stuff sack is included, you have seen it above.
  • Night Light pocket is on the ceiling, see the picture below.
