What this Browning Camping Klondike -30 Degree Bag is about

Here you have a very typical rectangular sleeping bag, and this means a very large and comfortable structure that offers lots of space to sprawl. But the picture above reveals that it has an extension for a pillow, so what you see in specifications as the length includes this extension too.

This brand is known for its warm and robust sleeping bags designed for the harshest weather conditions, you can realize this also when you see their McKinley -30 Sleeping Bag or Browning Camping Denali -30 Degree Mummy Sleeping Bag. So this Klondike -30 is with the same temperature rating as the other two bags.

Temperature rating & materials

So the official temperature rating is -30 F (-34 C), this is the same as in the mentioned McKinley bag. I shall keep comparing the two bags as they share many similar features. But note that the Klondike Bag is without a true hood. 

The insulation is again the same as in the McKinley bag, and you have it exactly the same amount. This is what they call the TechLoft Silver insulation, a sort of micro-denier fibers with a siliconized finish for maximum insulation, loft, and compactness.

Such synthetic materials are designed to perform great even in damp and wet conditions. Note that you have 160 oz (4.54 kg) of the insulation alone. The bag is with a two-layer offset construction to eliminate cold spots.

The shell is a heavy-duty cotton canvas, and the inner liner is a pleasant 100% cotton flannel. Cotton is always the most pleasant material for such structures and it is quiet as compared to synthetic shells, but it is not the best option in wet conditions. This is the main difference when compared to McKinley -30 Bag which is with a synthetic shell. This makes the Klondike -30 bag heavier as well.

The mentioned temperature rating is provided by the manufacturer, so there is no independent certification to confirm this. But if you are familiar with outdoor stuff, you know well that this is a reliable brand. Nevertheless, it is always best to test the bag in controlled conditions. 

The zipper is L-shaped #10, and you can open the bag completely and use it as a blanket. They recommend hand-washing. Note that there is no stuff sack here, you have straps to keep the bag folded.

Who is it for

Weight-wise, this is a heavy thing that weighs 15 lb (6.8 kg). So it is heavier than McKinley Bag for one kilogram, so imagine, and it is also bulkier.

Size-wise, this bag is even larger than the McKinley bag. Official dimensions are 92 x 38 inches (234 x 97 cm), but note that this includes the mentioned extension for the pillow, which is around 16 inches or so. But see its width, because of this it is included in my list of extra wide sleeping bags for adults.

Regarding seasons & best use, obviously, this is a bag for cold weather, but as you can open it completely, you can use it as a blanket throughout the year. But you would not want to carry it anywhere, this is for car camping. The bag is warm and heavy, but for such low temperatures, it is best to go for a mummy-type structure that has less volume, and for a bag with a warm hood.

Regarding the price, I see this sleeping bag as a bargain, a truly great value for the money.

I see the bags as follows:

• The Klondike -30 is more pleasant with its cotton shell.
• But it is heavier than the McKinley bag, and it is less suitable for wet conditions.
• The temperature rating is the same, but McKinley -30 Bag with its well-designed hood is warmer.
• If you do not go for such low temperatures and in a drier environment, the Klondike -30 bag would be a better choice. It is also more affordable.
