Key features & benefits

  • Inflatable sleeping pad.
  • Very thick.
  • Compact.
  • Great price.

What this is about

Kelty has several products with the word Galactic in the name, so there is a Galactic SI Sleeping pad and also a Galactic 30 Sleeping Bag. The pad presented here is inflatable, so this is an air pad and without insulation, and it should not be mixed with their Galactic SI pad.

This is a rectangular type with a single inflate/deflate valve on the bottom side, and with transverse baffles that are raised a bit on the sides to keep you centered on the pad.

Materials

The fabric is described by the manufacturer as super-soft stretch, with different properties on the two sides. The top is a 30D polyester and the bottom is a much stronger 150D polyester.

There is no insulation inside, except for what you can get from the air that is trapped. The air allows it to float as you realize from the picture below.

The pad comes with a carry sack shown below, the dimensions are (L x D) 11 x 4 inches (28 x 10 cm). So this is a very compact item that can easily be carried in the pack.

Who is this Kelty Galactic Air Rectangular Sleeping Pad for

Regarding the size, you have a surface that measures 73.23 x 23.62 inches (186 x 60 cm). So the width is quite typical but the length is not the best for tall users.

The thickness is very good, you have 3.5 inches (9 cm) of cushion. This is great for any type of sleeper.

Regarding seasons & climate, this pad offers no insulation so it is best suited for the warmer part of the year, maximum for two seasons or so.

Regarding the weight, this pad can be carried on the trail, the weight is 2 lb 6 oz (1.08 kg), and its packed size is excellent.

But there are many lighter options if you are ready to pay much more. Check this Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Ultralight Backpacking Air Mattress to see what I mean, it is insulated and less than half the weight of the Kelty’s pad, but it costs 3 times more.

Regarding the price, the pad is very affordable. But this is not surprising for this brand.
