What is in the name

This Coleman Ridgeline tent has been on the market for longer than a decade already, built originally for the EU market. So it has some features that are common for all the EU tents of this manufacturer, like huge waterproof rating, multiple rooms, etc.

This is an extended dome type tent with the central dome area and two extensions on the sides supported with extra loops. This is why it looks like a dome-tunnel hybrid.

The original name on the EU market is Coleman Ridgeline 4 Plus tent, but on the Amazon-UK it is with the word Ridgline and the same holds for the Amazon-US where they use a bit awkward name that I use in the title above.

This is an impressive construction with 3 rooms. Those include two inner tents on the sides, and one central living room, you will see the floor plane below. 

Note that the sleeping rooms are with their own sewn-in floor while the living room is what is described as a linked-in bathtub style floor, see the picture below. This means you can remove it or rolled to the side when not needed.

The inner tents (sleeping rooms) are with large doors equipped with mesh all the way to the ground. These inner tents attach to the shell and there is a lot of space between the inner walls and the shell. So this is a hybrid single-double layer construction. The living area is under the shell tent only, and the sleeping rooms are true 2-layer structures.

The tent has two doors on the opposite sides of this living area, see the picture below. As already mentioned, and shown in the top picture above, the tent offers an awning configuration with the poles that are included in the package.

This is a tall tent with a stand-up peak height in the main dome area and the peak height of 80.7 in (205 cm). The tent is not freestanding, so bear this mind when you choose your camping place. Note that you have 4 solid PVC windows in the living room.

Ventilation

The tent is without mesh on the shell, so it relies on vents. You have them several and they all are roof vents, a couple in the living area under the dome, and you have one on each of the extensions. You can see some of them in the picture below.

Who is it for

Space-wise, the tent is with the declared 4-person capacity. The two sleeping rooms together offer 5.88 square meters (63.3 ft²), and you also have the central living room with its 42 ft² (3.91 m²). This is 105.3 ft² (9.79 m²) in total and per person this gives 26.3 ft² (2.4 m²).

This explains the word “plus” in the name, this is a generous space for 4 people. A few more people can sleep in the living room but the floor here is not sewn-in and you would not have full protection from crawling insects and snakes.

Climate-wise and seasons-wise, this tent was originally built for the European market and you have a great waterproof rating, the tent is aerodynamic and quite enclosed with its solid windows.

It offers full protection in a 3-season use, but it is more suitable for a cooler environment than for warm summer camping. You can close all the vents if you feel cold, and the windows are solid and translucent.

Weight-wise, with 22.92 lb (10.4 kg) of weight it is moderately heavy but the area is huge so such a weight is expected.

The packed size 24.4 x 9.06 x 9.06 inches (62 x 23 x 23 cm) is quite good for a tent of such a size. You can transport it even on a motorbike.

Materials 

The poles

The poles are fiberglass and you have them 4, and there is also a set of poles for the awning configuration. You have color-coding used for the poles, pole sleeves, and bedroom inner hooks.

The fabric

This is what they call the WeatherTec system, the shell is a durable 185T polyester and with a 3000 mm waterproof rating. The seams are taped. The groundsheet is a polyethylene, fully waterproof, and very strong, and the same material is the floor of the inner tents.

The inner tents’ canopies are a breathable polyester and no-see-um mesh combination. The large inner doors are double layer with mesh and zippered panels. This is great both for ventilation and for privacy. The materials are fire-retardant and that it is with UV Guard system which offers SPF 50 protection.

Other features

• Optimally placed guy-lines along the poles and around the tent for stability in high winds.
• The inner bedrooms are pre-attached.
• Continuous pole sleeves.
• Internal pockets in the sleeping rooms, and a couple of them are also under the dome.
• A carry bag is included.
