What is in the name
This Granite Peak 4 is a tunnel-type tent, and in this particular case this means it is not freestanding. So you have to stake it down properly to be fully functional. This is a hybrid double and single layer tent, with a sleeping area which is a tent within the shell tent. The tent is a tall and pleasant structure with a stand-up height, you have 78.7 inches (200 cm) along the tent’s axis.
The tent has been on the EU market for a few years already. The style and features are similar to many other EU tents from this and other brands. This means that the area is large and this holds in particular for the living area.
BlackOut design
The words BlackOut in the name imply that they built it from darker materials and the tent officially reflects up to 99% of the daylight. This also creates a cooler atmosphere in the tent, they claim it is up to 5 degrees cooler during the day. This is an awarded design and Coleman has a long series of tents of various sizes where it is used.
With such a design you can sleep longer in the morning and also take a nap during the day, and this is particularly useful if you are camping with kids.
Rooms, windows & doors
The tent has two sleeping rooms separated with a removable divider. This sleeping area is a tent within the shell tent. You also have a large living room in front of it. This part is a single-layer construction. The view of the sleeping area is shown in the picture below. It remains attached to the shell tent when you pack the structure.
Each of the two sleeping rooms is with its own door and mesh window equipped with a zippered panel. The living room is with one large door under the porch. Note that this entry point is with two parallel zippers, and you have both mesh and panel here as two separate layers.
So this is all properly done and you have full protection from insects in the living room. The door flap and the mesh can be rolled up and fixed above the entrance as you see below.
There are 4 solid translucent windows in the living rooms, they are equipped with blinds from inside, for privacy and to reduce glare. All of them are visible in the picture above. One more window with mesh and panel is on the rear side of the tent, behind the sleeping rooms (shown in the picture below).
Ventilation
As mentioned above, the main door has a mesh layer in its full size. This you can keep with mesh only whenever the porch is in place. The picture below shows the vent above the main door. So this vent can always be kept open in combination with the awning or without it.
You have already seen the large window on the back, and it doubles also as a vent. It can be kept open all the time because of its two zippers and the specially designed cover, see the video below. A guyline is in place to stake it out. This will generate good crossflow in the tent.
But this is not all; there is a large floor vent in the living room under one of the large solid windows. It is on the left side when you look from the entry point.
In the pictures above you have seen a large gap between the inner tent and the shell. This is enough for good air circulation around the inner tent. The inner tent fabric is breathable and the inner doors have mesh sections, you have seen one in the pictures above. So there is little one could object to this design, this is well done.
Awning (or porch)
The awning area is huge and you have plenty of space to keep your camping table and chairs there, and to use this area for cooking and sitting. With the awning on, the main door is fully protected from the rain. The awning has its own two loops for support as you see in the picture. Note that you do not have to use the awning all the time, you have seen this in one of the pictures above.
Who is it for
Size-wise, the tent is with the declared capacity of 4 people. Now, the area is huge, you have 5.9 m² in the sleeping rooms, plus 6 m² in the living room. This is almost 3 square meters per person. So if needed, this tent can easily accommodate twice more people. The picture below shows the most important dimensions and the floor plan.
Note that even in the living room you can sleep and be fully protected. The floor is sewn-in and sealed in all the area. There is also a huge area under the awning to keep your gear, roughly of the size of the inner tent. But this is not completely protected from the rain. In any case, you have it as a nice extension of your living area.
It is rare to see a tent with the capacity that is much bigger than the declared capacity. But this is what you have here.
Climate-wise & seasons-wise, as far as I understand this tent has been originally built for the EU market, so the waterproof rating is huge as usual in the EU. The solid windows make it enclosed and this implies that you have to rely on vents which you can open and close as you wish. So this is a design that will work great in a cooler environment.
The same holds if you use it in areas with lots of rain and have to spend a lot of time inside, the living room is huge and pleasant, and the waterproof rating is high. If you camp in dry and warm areas, simply use the mesh door and keep the vents open all the time.
The tent is tall and with fiberglass poles, so I would rather avoid very windy areas in particular if it is used with the awning. Without the awning it will perform much better in the case of winds, there are many guylines to secure it properly.
The weight is 43 lb (19.5 kg) so this is a heavy thing and you would not carry it anywhere. But the packed size 23.2 x 11.4 x 11.4 inches (59 x 29 x 29 cm) is simply great, and you can transport it even on a motorbike. In any case, this is for places with a motorized access.
Materials
The poles
The poles are fiberglass, and you have them 5. Three of them are for the tent and two for the porch. You will see in the video below how to use them. This is all standard design, with a pin-and-ring system at the tent’s base, with clips on the walls, and with sleeves on the roof. All is color-coded for an easy setup.
The fabric
The fabric is polyester with the usual PU coating. It is fire-retardant and with a very high waterproof rating, 4500 mm water column, so this is again typical for EU tents. It comes with a UVGuard technology that offers SPF 50 UV protection from the sun’s rays. The inner tents are a breathable polyester.
The floor is polyethylene, a sort of plastic, there is no info about its rating but no doubt it is much higher than the rest of the tent. This is a bathtub design. Note that the inner tents have their extra floors so you have two layers in this area. The solid windows are probably PVC material.
Other features
- Many storage pouches in the living room, 6 in total on the wall between the two inner doors.
- E-cable port is available.
- The lantern ring is on the ceiling.
- Setup time is around 15-20 minutes. One person can easily set this tent up.
