Last Modified: 12/04/2023

Coleman Tent Cook 4 is an impressive structure with 3 rooms, 4 solid windows, and a huge waterproof rating, suitable for 3-seasons-plus family camping adventures.

Key features & benefits

  • Tunnel type tent.
  • 3 Rooms.
  • 1 Door.
  • 4 PVC solid windows.
  • Fiberglass poles.
  • Huge waterproof rating.
  • Sewn-in floor.

What this Coleman Cook 4 Person Tent is about

This is a smaller tent from the series of two, and it has been on the EU market for many years, yet only recently it has appeared on the US market. It is typical for Coleman’s tents built for the EU zone to have large space and multiple rooms, so here you have three rooms in total.

There is a large living room plus an inner tent with two sleeping units. The divider between the two sleeping rooms is with a zipper so you have as much privacy as possible in a tent. But the divider can be removed and you can use the inner tent as a single room, plus the living room.

You can remove the inner tent and have one large space under the shell tent. So the tent offers 1, 2, and 3 room configuration. This is a tunnel-type tent with three loops, it is not freestanding so you have to stake it down properly.

There are 4 large PVC windows, and they are equipped with shutters from inside to reduce glare and for privacy. Note that the set of toggles that they added allow for using the shatters half-length only if you wish so. With such solid windows you have an enclosed structure very suitable for cold weather camping.

Note also that the tent is with a stand-up height of 78.74 inches (200 cm) so this is a very pleasant and comfortable structure. There is only one door visible in the pictures, but as you realize it is huge and with dual zippers so you can roll it up and fix above.

The inner tent is with its own floor, but you also have a fully sewn-in and sealed shell floor. So the sleeping area is with two floors and this is the maximum protection you can have in a tent.

Ventilation

This tent comes with almost everything you need for ventilation, and this is important because there are no mesh areas on the shell at all. So it relies on vents only, and there are several of them on the two narrow sides, they are visible in the pictures. But those are all high vents, they did not add any floor vent, pity.

There is a 10 cm distance between the inner tent and the shell, so you have airflow to reduce condensation. There are two inner doors and they are both with mesh sections in the upper parts.

Please see more about this series in this short video, note that this is their 6-person version and not the 4-person tent presented here, and there are some differences in the doors and windows:

Materials

The poles

The poles are fiberglass, three identical loops so there is nothing to guess. There is the usual pin and ring system that connects the poles with the base of the tent. The roof is with sleeves, you have seen this in the video.

The fabric

The shell is polyester with a huge 3000 mm waterproof rating and all seams are taped. So this is an impressive number. The inner tent is breathable polyester. The groundsheet of the shell and of the inner tents is a durable and fully waterproof polyethylene. This is a bathtub design so you are definitely safe from the ground. They claim this is all flame retardant and UV resistant material.

Other features

  • Guy ropes and pegs are included in the package.
  • There are small wall pockets in each of the two sleeping rooms.
  • A lantern loop is on the ceiling.
  • Carry bag is included, see it in the picture.

Who is this Cook 4 person tent for

Regarding the area, the declared capacity is 4 people and the tent offers the total area of 135.6 ft² (12.6 m²). This means that you have an incredible 33.9 ft² (3.15 m²) per person. There are no many tents on the market that can match this.

Note that the actual space can be for 0.7 square meters smaller if you use the inner tent because of the space between the shell and the inner tent that is left for ventilation, but in any case this is a huge area.

The picture below shows what you actually have and how nice the space organization is. The living room offers 6 square meters, and the inner two sleeping rooms in total offer 5.88 m².

There is no doubt this tent can accommodate 4 people more if necessary, the living room is fully protected as pointed out above.

Regarding seasons and climate, this is a 3-season-plus tent. Everything can be closed if it is cold outside, and when it is warm you will rely on vents. But all in all, it is better suited for a cooler environment than for warm summer camping.

The huge door can be used for ventilation as long as the sky is clear, but what I dislike is the absence of mesh on the door. On the other hand, the waterproof rating is great, and the tent is with numerous guylines on all sides so it will protect you no matter the weather.

Regarding the weight, with its 30.2 lb (13.7 kg) this is a heavy tent, but the area is large so this is expected. The packed size is great for such a big tent, its carry bag measures 23.2 x 11.4 x 11.4 inches (59 x 29 x 29 cm), but in any case, it needs a car for transportation.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

This is a car camping tent with multiple rooms and solid windows, and with a huge waterproof rating, very tall and pleasant. It should protect you in any weather conditions. I have added it to my list of best 4 person tent for car camping.

Note that this Coleman Granite Peak 4 Camping Tent is built in a similar style so you might want to compare them. But if you need something for a very warm climate better check some of the cabin tents here in the site, with mesh on the ceiling and on the windows, or canvas tents.
