Key features & benefits

  • Dome-type tent.
  • Aluminum poles.
  • 1 Door & 1 vestibule.
  • Full coverage fly.
  • Vents.
  • Fly window.
  • Footprint included.
  • 5-Year warranty.

What this is about

Coleman has recently launched a new series of dome shaped tents under the name PEAK1. They are for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 people. So this Coleman PEAK1 4-Person Dome Tent is one of them. The name suggests this is a dome tent, but the walls are steep and tall because of its pre-bent poles so you have lots of shoulder space and volume.

The picture below shows how it looks without the fly so you get the idea. As you realize, they have added one extra pole that makes the front almost completely vertical.

This is how the tent looks without the fly.

The tent is tall for its overall size, the peak height is 70 inches (178 cm). From the picture above you realize that without the fly the structure is fully freestanding. This is not so when the fly is on because you have to stake it properly to be functional.

The door and window

The tent has one very large door and its full-coverage fly creates a large vestibule. It is with with two parallel zippers (see the picture below) so the flap can be rolled up as in the top picture above.

One extra feature here is its rear window shown below. So you can unzip it and have views around as long as the sky is clear.

Note that this fly window is matched with an inner zippered window which you can also open completely:

Materials & other details

The poles: There are three of them and this is a strong 7000-series aluminum. They claim it can withstand winds up to 45 mph.

The fabric: Here you have their WeatherTec Plus system with a high waterproof rating which is 2000 mm. All seams are taped. The floor is a bathtub style.

Note that the tent comes with a footprint included.

Ventilation

The canopy is almost completely mesh and the fly is with two vents on the sides equipped with Velcro stiffeners.

There are 2 vents.
There are 2 vents.

When the sky is clear you can keep the fly window open and the same holds for the vestibule flap. So this all should work well and there is nothing substantial to object here.

Who is it for

Regarding the best use & climate, you have already seen all essential features of this tent so you have full protection. It is ventilated enough for a warm weather, and its full fly will protect you from the cold if you use it as a three-season camping tent.

The tent is reasonably aerodynamic and it will perform well even in windy conditions, you have seen their statement about wind testing.

Regarding the size, the floor dimensions are such that it can indeed accommodate 4 pads, but the number of users should be downgraded to 3 maximum. The vestibule adds lots of useful and protected space for storage.

Regarding the weight, the tent is moderately light, it weighs 12 lb 15.1 oz (5.9 kg). They give trail weight as well, but this is not a tent for the trail. Check my list of best 4 person backpacking tents if this is what you need.

The packed size is 25.98 x 8.66 x 8.66 inches (66 x 22 x 22 cm), so this is good for a car camping tent. The carry bag is nicely designed so it is easy to pack the tent in it.

Regarding the price, it is quite high in particular because we are used to see budget-friendly tents from this brand. But this is not an ordinary series, you have quality materials here.

Final thoughts & rating

In summary, this Coleman PEAK1 4-Person Dome Tent is well-built and it offers full protection in practically any 3-season weather conditions. It is ventilated, and its rear window is clearly liked by many. You have premium materials used in its construction.

The weight is such that it is not really for the trail, and this is why it is a bit difficult to determine where it fits best. It is definitely too small for 4 people, and you can use it as a car camping tent for 2 or maximum 3 occupants.

Below you can see how I rate it against my usual rating criteria so that you can easily compare it with other items of this type:
