Coleman Camp Burst Dark Room 4-Person Tent

Last Modified: 04/18/2025

The Coleman Camp Burst Dark Room 4-Person Tent is an instant setup tent, very easy to use, freestanding and pleasant with its numerous windows and a dark inner.

Key features & benefits

  • Instant setup.
  • Dark rest design.
  • Freestanding.
  • 1 Door.
  • 3 Separate windows.
  • Fiberglass frame.
  • E-cable port.

What is in the name

This is a tent that they launched recently, and the title tells you a bit about it. So the tent is an instant setup type and it opens like an umbrella. The picture below shows how it looks when unfolded on the ground. So from there you raise it in one move.

This means that the frame is pre-attached so you open it easily and quickly. The official setup time is 45 seconds only. Even if you add a couple of minutes, this is still great. My guess is that the word Burst in the official name is there to indicate its instant design.

The shape is such that it could be described as a cabin-type and with a hexagonal base. You have straight support poles and steep walls. The tent is fully freestanding as well, so you can move it and rotate even when the fly is on.

The picture below shows it without the fly, so you can understand its structure. Note that it is quite low, the peak height is only 51.6 inches (131 cm).

The door and windows

There is only one door here, and it is equipped with a double-layer window. There are also three separate windows that are with the same structure.

So you can have plenty of air when you keep them with mesh only, and you have views everywhere around.

Materials

The frame: You have a fiberglass structure here, and there are 6 leg poles and 6 roof poles that converge to the top hub element. This is reflected in the weight which is substantial, more below.

The fabric: The tent is all built from polyester and this includes also its bathtub floor. The waterproof rating is quite low, only 1000 mm, but usually you do not need more.

This is also a Dark Room technology that blocks 90% of sunlight. The picture below shows how this looks:

The rain fly is symbolic, it is just a cap that covers the small top area.

The tent is very easy to use and you can realize this from the video below which shows its cousin that is not dark rest type but it has exactly the same other features:

E-Port accepts power cords with the tent securely closed, the picture below shows how it looks:

Ventilation

You have already seen about its 3+1 mesh windows. There is also a mesh section under the fly on the top, and they have added a floor vent as well, see the picture below. So there is nothing substantial missing here.

Who is this Coleman Camp Burst Dark Room 4-Person Tent for

Regarding the best use & climate, I have seen it described as a 3-season tent. Such a statement usually has no much meaning, and it depends on how much you want to suffer in a tent. But indeed the tent is closable so it can be used for a 3-season camping.

The fly is such that it would not last long in harsh conditions, so I would not take seriously their claim that it is suitable for winds of up to 35 mph. The waterproof rating is low, and I see this tent best suited for calm weather and without much rain.

Regarding the size, the tent is officially for 4 people and they describe it as “spacious”. They do not provide the number for the area. But this is a hexagon and the dimensions are given below, so you should have around 59.2 ft² (5.5 m²).

Note that the length of each of its 6 edges is around 1.45 cm. So it is practically very difficult to put 4 sleeping pads on the floor.

In other words, the official capacity makes no much sense. This is a tent for two people or maximum three. The picture below shows how this would look in the case of a couple.

Regarding the weight, the tent is quite heavy with its 16 lb 8.5 oz (7.5 kg). But this is because of its instant frame and so many legs and roof poles. The weight is not really important, this is a tent designed for car camping.

Regarding the price, I would describe it as fair for such a nicely designed tent.

Final thoughts & rating

In summary, this Coleman Camp Burst Dark Room 4-Person Tent is indeed nicely designed and it comes with several great features. Those include its instant structure, dark rest design, and great windows, plus a cable port.

But it is best to ignore its official capacity, this is a tent for two people maximum. Fully recommended.

Below you can see how I rate it against my usual rating criteria so that you can easily compare it with other items of this type:
