Hub Frame at Its Best: Naturehike MG Hexagonal Yurt Camping Tent

Last Modified: 12/31/2023

A hub tent frame implies shock-corded poles that are all connected to one or more hub elements on the roof, so the whole frame is a single piece with interconnected elements. A great example of this is the Naturehike MG Hexagonal Yurt Camping Tent. Keep reading.

Key features & benefits

  • Freestanding yurt tent.
  • Hub frame.
  • Cable port.
  • 3 Windows.
  • 1 Door.
  • Awning pole included.
  • Huge waterproof rating.
  • Ventilated.

What this is about

As mentioned in the title, here you have an excellent example of a hub tent frame, and you can see it in the picture below that show the tent without the fly.

There are 6 shock-corded poles that all converge and connect to the hub element on the top of the structure. So all the tubes together with the hub are one single piece, they are always connected and you can never lose any part.

This makes the tent setup easy, you unfold the frame, attach the legs to the ground grommets, and then hang the tent to this frame. Observe also that some segments of the poles are pre-bent to create the shape of a traditional yurt tent. This adds volume and headspace in the tent.

With such a frame the tent is also fully freestanding, and this holds even when the partial-coverage fly is on. The base is hexagonal as indicated in its official name, below you can see its aerial view.

The door and windows

The tent is a single-room structure, with one wide double-layer door. This means you have full size zippered mesh door and a full size zippered panel, both with an inverted-T shape zipper.

There are also three double-layer windows that are quite close to the floor so they double as low vents as well. Below you can see one of them.

Awning with an included pole

The fly can be described as a partial-coverage type, and you realize this from the pictures. But they have designed it to create a small awning above the door.

This is useful mainly to allow for an easier access because the tent walls are quite low, only 80 cm or so. The pole for the awning is included in the package, and you can see in the pictures how it is used.

Materials

You have some great materials used here, all the pieces are shown in the picture below.

Elements in the package.

The frame: All the poles are a 7001 aluminum alloy, and they are thick and strong. Note that the awning pole is 51.2 inches (130 cm) long.

The fabric: All the parts of the tent are the same durable 210T polyester cloth with a polyurethane coating and a waterproof rating of 3000 mm.

The fly attaches to the tent with hooks, one is shown below on the right. Inside you have a lantern hanging hook shown below. Note that there is a cable port as well.

Ventilation

You have already seen about it double-layer door and windows. So this will create an optimal air cross flow, and they have added a mesh section on the roof, you can see how this looks:

But in addition to all this, they have added multiple vents on the fly, so vapor can always escape easily. The mentioned awning will also help in reducing condensation on the underside of the fly. So ventilation in this tent is practically optimal.

Who is it for

Regarding the best use & climate, I would describe this tent as a very good 3-season shelter. Its ventilation is perfect for a warm weather camping, and its waterproof rating is huge, so you will be protected if you use it in a wet climate.

On the other hand, it is fully closable as you see in the picture below. The tent is low profile but with such an awning and partial coverage fly I would avoid very windy places.

Regarding the size, they describe it as a 3-4 person tent. Below you can see its floor plan. Note that you have 58.8 ft² (5.46 m²) of the floored area, and the dimensions are such that it is indeed possible to put 4 pads on the floor. It may be very suitable for parents with two kids.

Note that it is not very tall, the picture below shows this:

Regarding the weight, with its 12.1 lb (5.5 kg) the tent can be described as moderate, you have seen its strong frame. But this is not something to carry long distances.

The packed size is shown below. So it is a bit bulky, and this is for places with a car access.

Regarding the price, I would say it is fair for such a great tent, please check the link below for updates.

Final thoughts & rating

In summary, the Naturehike MG Hexagonal Yurt Camping Tent excels with its innovative hub tent frame, ensuring easy setup and a secure, interconnected structure.

Its freestanding design, hexagonal base, and thoughtful features, such as a partial-coverage fly with an included awning pole, contribute to a comfortable camping experience.

The tent prioritizes ventilation with a double-layer door, three windows, and strategically placed vents. Crafted from durable materials, including a robust aluminum alloy frame and a waterproof polyester cloth, it offers reliability in diverse weather conditions.

With a 3-4 person capacity, the tent provides ample space for a small family camping. While its packed size may limit backpacking suitability, it’s well-suited for car-accessible camping in 3-season conditions.

Priced fairly, it delivers excellent value for its features and performance. I have included it in my list of best 4-person car camping tents.

Below you can see how I rate it (as a 4-person tent) against my usual rating criteria so that you can easily compare it with other items of this type:
