In this text, I present best 3-in-1 jackets for women that are on the market, all top models, very popular, and with a great rating by users.
What are 3 in 1 jackets, aka interchange jackets or component jackets
If you are here, this should mean you want to find a jacket for all seasons. Sounds like an impossible task, but the solution is simple: you should go for an interchange jacket, also known as a three-in-one jacket. You can read more about this concept in my separate text. Here, just to point out the following elements and features of an interchange jacket:
- You have an external waterproof and breathable shell jacket.
- You also have an internal fleece jacket or a jacket of some other material.
- Both jackets can be used separately, so you have two tools for 3-seasons use.
- Both jackets can be used together. In this case, the internal jacket is normally zipped into the shell jacket (but it doesn’t have to be). This is a combination for wintertime in general, and for outdoor use in cold conditions (high altitudes etc.).
So, keep reading, I am sure you will be able to find something that suits you, there are great models presented below.

1. Columbia Emerald Lake Interchange Jacket
Here you have a very affordable interchange jacket which they build in 4 color combinations, two for the shell jacket and two for the inner layer. The example in the picture tells you that both of them look cool and fashionable, great for using separately or together.
The inner jacket zips in and this is an item with a high and pleasant collar and with their toasty Thermarator insulation. The shell jacket is with waterproof and breathable Omni-TECH exterior and Omni-HEAT thermal reflective lining. The materials you have here are nylon and polyester combination.
This is a rather new jacket on the market but it has already received a number of reports on Amazon and the average rating is exceptionally high, 4.7/5 as of the moment of writing this text. The jacket offers a comfort stretch and it comes with an attached and adjustable storm hood. Please follow the link for more.
2. Columbia Jacket Of All Trades Women’s Jacket
I would dare to say that this is the most unique interchange jacket currently on the market. You have three elements as shown in the pictures above and you can use them together or separately or in combinations. So you have 6 options in total.
You have a very chic Omni-Tech waterproof/breathable critically seam-sealed rain shell crafted from a rich, natural-feeling cotton-blend fabric that is combined with a water-resistant fleece liner and an anorak-style sleeveless vest.
The jacket is with zippered hand pockets, adjustable cuffs, a drop tail, and a back storage pocket. The center back length is 32.5 inches. The two external layers are 70% cotton with 30% nylon, and 82% nylon with 18% polyester. The liner is 100% Microtemp XF II polyester.
3. Columbia Women’s Bugaboo Interchange Jacket
This jacket is described in detail in my separate text. Here, to add only that this is a great jacket with Columbia’s Ultra Touch external shell and a free-hanging mesh inside. The internal fleece jacket is Columbia’s Dotswarm Full Zip 220-gram material, warmer than average fleece due to their patented thermal-reflective technology. There is much more in the text so please follow the link.
4. Columbia Women’s Frigid Flight Long Interchange 3 in 1 Jacket
This jacket is the only long model here, and the same structure is with its internal jacket. This makes it a typical casual piece of garment, not something you would use in your outdoor adventures. Again three-in-one design, so you have the coat and liner to wear separately for mild temperatures, or combined together for the ultimate in layered warmth. All Columbia’s technology is here, so you have a nylon shell with Omni-Tech waterproof-breathable fabric and with sealed seams.
Here too you have the three-in-one design, so you have the coat and liner to wear separately for mild temperatures, or combined together for the ultimate in layered warmth. All Columbia’s technology is here, so you have a nylon shell with Omni-Tech waterproof-breathable fabric and with sealed seams.
You have a detachable hood and three external zippered pockets, plus a zippered pocket for extra security. The zipper is with a storm flap, and on the cuffs, you have velcro tabs for the best fit and protection against the cold. On the bottom hem, you have an adjustable draw-cord.
The zip-out liner features a quilted polyester shell, polyester lining, and Columbia’s Omni-Heat thermal reflective technology: this includes shiny dots that thermally reflect your own heat back towards you. This piece can be worn on its own as an everyday jacket. It also has two external pockets, a full zipper front, and a high collar.
On Amazon, the fit as expected statistics for this jacket is rather high, 88%. The average rate based on a rather limited number of reports so far is an incredible 5.0/5.

Here too, similar to the Bugaboo jacket, you have a warm and water-repellent zip-in liner with thermal reflectivity, and from outside you have a waterproof-breathable and seam-sealed shell. The tulip hem and angled seaming lines lend feminine sensibilities to this warm winter jacket, and the inner liner’s strategically shaped baffling flatters the figure.
The Whirlibird jacket is a very popular item, available at several departments on Amazon, and with a very high average rating, in the range 4.5/5 – 4.6/5, dependent on the department where it is being sold. 6. Mammut Convey 3 in 1 HS Hooded Jacket for Women
As usual for this type of jackets, this Mammut Convey 3 in 1 HS Hooded Jacket for Women is also an incredibly versatile and nicely constructed system with two jackets in the package, and of course suitable for all seasons.
The shell jacket is a hardshell fully waterproof and breathable 2.5-layer structure with a huge waterproof rating. How huge? Well, 28000 mm, something rarely seen. This is achieved due to a GORE-TEX membrane.
The inner jacket is a very stylish piece with a combination of a 750-fill duck down in the main part and synthetic insulation on the sleeves.
You also have pit zips for ventilation on the shell jacket, several color combination and lots more. Please follow the link for more details.
7. Marmot Featherless Component Jacket For Women
Here you have an external rain shell jacket with a 2-layer Marmot’s MemBrain waterproof and breathable fabric and 100% seam taped.
The removable interior liner jacket is itself water-resistant and you have their innovative Thinsulate Eco Featherless synthetic insulation. It is very compressible and it provides a warmth even in wet conditions. It looks and feels like down but it is synthetic. This is a loose-fill that mimics down and it traps the body heat.
So as you can imagine, each of the two jackets can be used on its own or combined with each other, for maximum adaptability to varying climates. The inner jacket zips into the shell and you also have snaps on the cuffs to attach it to the shell.
This is a versatile three-in-one system with what they call the Angel-Wing Movement design. This implies more fabric on the back so that you can move hands freely and you will not be constricted or inhibited if you have to make some scramble. It is ideal for backpackers, hikers, and climbers, but also for casual use.
The shell jacket is with two zippered hand pockets and an internal zippered pocket. The hem is with an elastic drawcord and the cuffs are with Velcro tabs.
The inner insulated jacket is also with three pockets, two zippered external pockets, and one internal zippered pocket. Here too you have its separate drawcord to prevent cold drafts. The cuffs are with elastic. So it is fully functional on its own.
8. Marmot Minimalist Component Jacket
This interchange jacket is based on Marmot’s famous Minimalist rain shell jacket, however, they have added a beautifully designed inner layer which is shown in the picture above.
So the external shell is with a GORE-TEX Paclite membrane, PFC free and DWR 100% seam taped 2.5 polyester layer construction, fully waterproof and breathable, suitable for all weather conditions. You have a fully-adjustable attached hood with a peripheral cord, the cuffs are with Velcro tabs, and the hem is with an elastic drawcord.
The inner jacket is filled with a lightweight and compressible Thermal R synthetic insulation that works well even in wet conditions. It looks so cool that you can surely use it as a stand-alone jacket.
The shell is with two zippered hand pockets and one zippered chest pocket, and you also have two zippered hand pockets on the inner jacket, so 5 pockets in total.
The fit is regular, the center back length is 29 inches (74 cm) and the weight is 1 lb 9.2 oz (714 g).
9. The North Face Women’s ThermoBall Triclimate Jacket
As you see, they use the word Triclimate for this type, but this is the same as the interchange or 3-in-1 jacket. You realize this from the picture above which shows the shell jacket and the inner jacket when it is unzipped from the shell. Before I continue, you might want to know that this jacket is available it some 20 or so different colors.
The outer jacket is a waterproof and breathable 2.5L hard shell, seam-sealed, and with the stretch DryVent membrane, a blend of polyester and elastane, with a durable water-repellent finish.
The DryVent is a system that has been lab- and field-tested to ensure the best possible durability and function. It is used in several of their jackets. Its waterproof rating is 25 PSI minimum after 20 launderings, and the breathability is 750 – 800 g/m²/24 hours average.
The inner layer is a jacket with a 30D nylon shell and warm, compressible PrimaLoft ThermoBall synthetic insulation. It is similar to down while offering better all-weather performance. It consists of small, round PrimaLoft synthetic-fiber clusters that trap the heat within small air pockets to retain warmth. They claim they have independent testing by Kansas State University showing that it is equivalent to 600-fill goose down. This also means it is lightweight and compressible.
You have an integrated adjustable hood and the shell is with pit zip vents. This is a standard fit, the average weight is 730 g (25.75 oz), the center back length for the outer shell is 27 inches and 24.75 for the inner.
10. Under Armour Women’s ColdGear Infrared Sienna 3-In-1 Jacket
This is a great outdoor jacket suitable for practically any activity on the snow. You have 100% polyester both in the shell and in the internal fleece jacket. They use what they call the ColdGear Infrared lining with a unique ceramic coating that seeks, absorbs & retains body heat to keep you warmer.
At Amazon, this jacket has received a very high average rate 4.5/5, but the fit as expected statistics is less great, 68%. Great color combinations are available, 8 in total. For price updates please check the link, at the moment of writing this text, it was around $150.

Summary
So to conclude this text with the best 3-in-1 jackets for women, if this is about casual use, then you might be happy with all of them. On the other hand, only the Columbia Women’s Frigid Flight Long jacket is not suitable for outdoor activities, with all others you will be doing fine. If this is about more dynamic outdoor activities, then I would suggest the models with pit zips. Want to remove the hood from time to time? Then the Under Armour ColdGear jacket is not for you.
Now, if none of these jackets is for you, note the following: practically every rain shell jacket becomes a 4-seasons tool if combined with a good fleece jacket as the underlayer. Have a look here in my text with rain shell jackets for women. You can combine them with some of these 8 Columbia fleece jackets, or these 5 fleece jackets by The North Face.
If you want a classic synthetic insulated jacket, please check this list with some impressive models for women. Need something with down? No problem, check my long list with the top-notch down jackets for women.
I hope the text has been useful. If this is so, please share it with others. I shall be happy to hear from you, there is a comment box below. Have a nice day.

Columbia Whirlibird IV jacket does not have removable hood. I can no longer seem to find a 3-in-1 with pit zips and a removable/stowable hood…
Jovo says
This jacket has been around for a decade already and it has been modified in the past. The version presented here has a removable hood, you can easily find it and see on YouTube. It is available on Amazon.
The version IV is with a fixed hood.
Nikki says
All of these are no longer available. It’s like it was an article written years ago and they just updated the title with this year.
Jovo says
No Nikki, this is your browser that directs you automatically to your local Amazon store where some of the jackets are missing. This has been happening since the pandemic started duet to affected supply lines.
Ben says
Where are you able to find the Columbia Frigid Flight Long Jacket? Everywhere online says not available.
Jovo says
I can see it right now available on Amazon, see the screenshot. If from your location you see unavailable, this is most likely related to the current pandemic. I know this for sure for many other products that are not available for me so I asked some people at various places in the US and the products were available for them.
Jennifer H . Westfall says
Nice collection of jackets, they are so good.
Jovo says
They are indeed, very versatile and reliable items which you can use throughout the year.
