What is this about
This tent is a freestanding two-layer structure with a massive fly that protects the inner tent and it creates a huge vestibule on one side, it is on the right in the picture below. This space is well protected so it acts like a floorless room.
The picture above shows a small vestibule on the other (left) side as well, but this is just for shoes. Below you can see some floor dimensions to get an idea about the size:
The mentioned large vestibule offers a space for sitting and cooking, you get some idea about it from the picture:
The tent is moderately tall, some additional numbers are shown below.
The doors
There are three doors created by the fly, two of them are on the main vestibule and one is on the rear side so you can exit the inner tent there as well.
Note that all of them are double-layer type, with a full size zippered mesh and zippered panels. You can see this in the picture:
I have quite a good overview of what is available on the market, and I can tell you this double-layer fly door feature is truly rare.
Awning
This is an extra feature here, so you can extend your living area and have a place to sit under the shade. The poles are not included, you can use a pair of trekking poles. Below you can see how this can look:
Integrated stove jack
The tent comes ready for a wood burning stove. This means you have a stove jack which is shown in the picture below. It is fully protected with a flap when not in use.
Materials
The poles & stakes: There are four thick 7001 aluminum alloy poles in the package. Some of them are pre-bent for extra volume inside. The pictures below show some details.
There are 13 aluminum stakes in the package, and all ropes to secure the tent to the ground. All the elements are shown below:
Note that the frame is external, and the inner tent is pre-attached. So you can set this tent up even in rain, and the inner will protected. This is a good dry setup design.
The fabric: The fabric description is a bit confusing. But the inner tent is all mesh. Note that the nylon floor is a bathtub style and its waterproof rating is 3000 mm, while its denier value appears to be 70D which is not much for a floor.
On Amazon, they write that the fly is a 30D nylon, and if this is true, this is not so great for a winter tent. But from some sources around I read that its rating is 2000 mm, so you will never need more.
Note that all critical places are with lots of reinforcement and seams are nicely done. In this sense the tent look perfect. There are also a pair of wall pockets inside, and a lantern hanging point, see the pictures.
Ventilation
The inner tent canopy is all mesh, so vapor can always escape. Three huge mesh doors on the fly will always provide plenty of air flow. But when you have to close them, you still have two vents on the rear side. In my view, that they are low positioned, so this is not really optimal.
Who is it for
Regarding the best use, seasons & climate, they describe it as a 4-season tent. By this they mean you can use it in winter as well. This may be so only if you use a wood burning tent stove, you have seen its pipe jack.
However, without a stove, this is just a 2-3 season tent. Its inner tent is all mesh, so this is not for a cold climate at all.
On the other hand, the poles are thick and this is aluminum. But the structure is large and this is not particularly strong construction in the case of snow accumulated on the tent.
It is fair to say that the tent is low profile, smooth, and aerodynamic, so this makes it very good if used in windy conditions. There is a skirt around, this is for extra protection against insects, rain, and cold drafts.
Regarding the size, it is described as a 2-person tent and this is true. The inner tent has plenty of space for two users, you have 37.1 ft² (3.45 m²). The two vestibules offer 42 ft² (3.9 m²).
This is more than 7.3 square meters, so you have lots of protected space even if you use a wood burning stove.
Regarding the weight, with its 8.8 pounds (4 kg) the tent is heavy, so it is best to ignore the word “backpacking” in its official name on Amazon. This is a large car camping tent so the weight is expected for such a size.
The packed size is great for its overall size, see the numbers below. You can indeed transport it even on a bicycle or a motorbike. I have seen some people reporting about such an experience.
Regarding the price, it is quite incredible for a tent with such features, a great value for the money.
