  • Ultralight.
  • Ultra compact.

What is in the name

I’ve had my eye on camping gear for quite a while, especially tents that promise a blend of innovation and comfort. Among the numerous brands I’ve encountered, OneTigris stands out.

A bit of background: OneTigris is known for their dedication to quality. They pitch their gear towards outdoorsy folks who demand durability and functionality without compromising on design.

Their GASTROPOD camping tent is a prime example of this philosophy in action. Often, tents can be forgettable items that blend into the camping experience, but not the GASTROPOD.

Its design and aesthetics catch the eye, promising an experience that stands out just as much as its appearance does. You have to admire when a piece of equipment can get you excited about the adventure itself.

When you look at the OneTigris GASTROPOD Camping Tent, the first thing you notice is its unconventional shape. This isn’t just for show. The design serves certain functions that make your camping experience smoother and more enjoyable.

So formally, this is just a fly, there is no inner tent here, and there is no floor. The shape is what can be described as a teepee tent, with one main central support pole.

Therefore, the tent is not freestanding and you have to stake it down before adding the central pole. Because of this, make sure you choose a spot where you can use its stakes and that the ground will keep them in place.

How many doors?

Short answer is two or one, this is a unique design. There are two zippers plus a panel in between and its central part can be staked while you can open those zippers so that they create two separate doors as in the picture:

Setup with 2 doors.

Awning setup: But you can unzip them both and release the central part from the picture above, and then create a gigantic awning and shape it as it suits you.

Below you can see how you can shape this panel with a pair of poles, note they are not included. With this you extend the living area a lot and have a space for sitting and dining in the shade.

The pictures below show some other possible configurations, it all depends just on your imagination:

Integrated stove jack

So yes, this is a hot tent, and it comes with an integrated stove jack located above the central panel between the two doors. Note that they have their OneTigris Tiger Roar Tent Stove so you can use it here.

The picture below shows the tent with a stove inside. Note that here the awning is created with one pole only.

Materials

You have some great stuff here, some elements are shown in the picture:

The poles & pegs: This is all aluminum, the main pole plus two short poles used on the rear side for the floor vents. You have plenty of pegs included as well as ropes.

The fabric: The shell is sil-nylon, in other words this is a 70D nylon with a single-sided silicone coating and taped seams for extra protection against the elements. Its waterproof rating is impressive 3000 mm, more than what you will ever need.

Some other features are shown in the pictures below. Observe a lantern hanging option and the snow skirt on the perimeter.

Ventilation

This is yet another aspect that makes this tent unique, and from the pictures below you get some idea about it.

So they have added no less than three low vents on the rear side of the tent. Here you have two short support poles, and when you stake the tent down, this all creates an overhanging setup as shown in the picture below left.

Note that these vents are two-layer, with a fixed mesh and with inner zippered panels. Below you can see them from outside and from inside.

They have also added several roof vents that are shown above, so this all creates plenty of vertical air flow, with a cooler air coming from the ground and vapor can escape through the roof openings.

Note that a similar low vents design is also in their OneTigris Conifer Canvas Tent with Stove Jack that is yet another floorless structure.

Who is it for

I guess it is best to start from the pictures below that give some numbers:

Some numbers.
Some numbers.

Regarding the best use & climate, on Amazon you will see the statement that this is a 4-season tent. However, this is not so. This term is usually wrongly used to describe a winter camping tent.

So if you put a wood burning stove onside, you have a hot tent for winter use. However, for all other seasons you would need an inner tent, otherwise you do not have protection from insects, spiders, and snakes. The tent as it is, is only for winter use.

Regarding the size, they do not provide the covered area number. But the tent is of an irregular octagon shape and my estimate is that the total covered area is in the range 118 – 129 ft² (11 – 13 m²).

On the OneTigris site they describe the tent as a two-person shelter, but there is also a statement about space for three campers. But on Amazon, you will see it described as a tent for 2-6 people.

It is a bit hard to determine the capacity correctly, it depends on how you plan to use it and in which season.

If used as a winter tent with a wood-burning stove inside, there is enough place for two people sleeping on their cots, and you can realize this from the picture below; one cot is already inside and there is enough space for yet another.

View inside with a stove, a cot, and a camping chair.
View inside with a stove, a cot, and a camping chair.

But if you use it in other seasons, you do not have protection from flying and crawling insects. So you will have to put inside an inner tent as in the picture below. In this case, the capacity will depend on how big this inner tent is.

View with a standard freestanding tent and a cot inside.

Note that currently they do no sell any accessory inner tent with this shell tent, but this may change.

Below you can see it with two cots, and a camping chair plus a camping side table. Clearly, plenty of space for two people.

So, in view of all this, I shall rate it as a 2-person tent, more below.

Regarding the weight, the tent can be described as ultralight with its 11.9 lb (5.4 kg); you have already seen how large the area is. But such a great weight is because there is no floor and there is no inner tent.

The carry bag.
The carry bag.

The same holds for its packed size which is excellent; but this is again due to the same reasons, the absence of floor and inner tent.

All in all, the tent can be carried to some distances from a vehicle, but bear in mind you need lots of other stuff for outdoor sleeping, it is not only about the tent. I see it as a great option for hunters.

Regarding the price, it may look a bit steep but this is a great tent so the price is justified, see for updates in the links below.

Final thoughts & rating

In conclusion, the OneTigris GASTROPOD Camping Tent is a distinctive and innovative shelter designed to redefine the camping experience. OneTigris, known for their commitment to quality, has crafted a tent that not only meets the demands of durability and functionality but also captures attention with its unique design.

The floorless, tipi-style structure, supported by a single central pole, showcases a blend of ultralight materials and an ultra-compact form, making it an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a balance between innovation and comfort.

The GASTROPOD’s standout features, including an integrated stove jack, unconventional door configurations, and a two-layered ventilation system, contribute to its versatility.

While the tent’s 4-season claim is limited to winter use with a wood-burning stove, its adaptability to various setups and configurations adds to its allure.

Despite limitations such as the absence of insect protection and an inner tent, the GASTROPOD earns praise for its ultralight construction, compact size, and unique design.

As a result, it stands as a compelling option for those who prioritize mobility and a memorable camping experience, particularly in winter conditions where its hot tent capabilities shine. I have included it in my list of best winter camping tents.

Below you can see how I rate it against my usual rating criteria so that you can easily compare it with other items of this type:
