Key features & benefits

  • Down fill.
  • Ultralight.
  • Very packable.
  • Waterproof fabric.
  • Versatile.
  • Very good price.

What this is about

You have seen already a lot in the title of this text. So this is a rectangular sleeping pad with a down fill and this implies a few important features, some mentioned above. They build it in two sizes, regular (R) and extra-large (XL). My focus here is on its regular size because this makes the comparison with other bags easier.

Incredibly light and packable: You have seen its weight in the title so indeed with 1.28 lb (580 g) of weight for its R size, this is an undeniably ultralight pad. From the positive side, the quality fill is partly behind this, but there is more to this. Namely, the pad is not very large, and there is no hood. On the other hand, the temperature rating is not so impressive, and this means there is not much insulation here. The result is such a weight.

As for its packed size (L x D) 10 x 4.5 in (25.4 x 11.2 cm) for the R size, clearly this is impressive. But the same factors mentioned above are here as well. So there are reasons behind such a packed size, and they are not all great.

The volume in the packed state is around 5.7 liters, so this is great but this is still a bit too much to be included in my list of ultra-packable sleeping bags with the 5-liters volume limit. This tells you that there are more packable bags on the market. If you follow the link you will see some that are only half the volume of this Naturhike pad.

The fabric: The fabric is very thin as you would expect from such a light bag. So you have a 15D/400T nylon, it is strong, pleasant, and they claim it is waterproof up to 3000 mm which is totally impressive if it is true. But I have seen some statements from the seller that contradict this. So this information is not reliable.

Note that they build the bag in two different colors and both of them look great to me. The zipper is a top-quality YKK, this is a Japanese brand and I would say the leader in this industry.

The fill: This bag is insulated with a great quality 800 fill power pure white goose down and you have it around 277 grams. It is kept in place in longitudinal baffles created by stitching through the bag. If you are not familiar with the numbers of such fills, this 800 is among the highest, the more the better. The official temperature rating is around 32 ℉ to 42.8 ℉ (0 – 6 Celsius).

Note that a down loses its insulation features when wet, and it also does not dry easily. Normally down is treated because of this, to improve its features, but there is no statement about this here. So having a waterproof shell mentioned above with such a fill is very important. But as I said, the mentioned waterproof rating is not reliable.

Versatility: You can unzip this bag and use it as a blanket as the picture below shows. This is what I do most of the time with my bags when it is not too cold, this is because I feel claustrophobic in bags.

But this bag also allows for attaching it to yet another bag of this type, this creates a double size bag that you can use with your partner. This is what you see in the picture below.

Two bags zipped together create a double-size bag.

All the mentioned features of this bag, and a few more, are summarized in this picture:

Who is it for

Regarding the weight mentioned above, this pad is light enough even for backpackers, and this makes it incredibly versatile and suitable for practically any outdoor activity.

Regarding the packed size, the same holds, you have seen how small it is when packed, so you can carry it in the pack and also on a bicycle, etc. The picture below shows it in its carry bag which is with compression straps.

This bag packs very small.
This bag packs very small.

Regarding the size, the R-size version of this bag is 74.8 x 28.35 inches (190 x 72 cm), so this is not a very long bag, and this is partly behind its weight and packed size.

So if you are a tall person you will have to go for the XL version. The weight, in this case, is 1.74 lb (0.79 kg) which is still great.

Regarding seasons & climate, it appears that the two versions R and XL have different temperature ratings. The manufacturer describes the bag as suitable for 3 seasons, but I would describe it as a 2-season bag.

There are several reasons for this. First, it is wise always to add 5-10 degrees to what the manufacturer declares as a temperature rating. This is because, even if you assume that the declared rating is correct, this is always about some “average” person, and this implies certain age and some other details that do not necessarily correspond to your own body situation.

Second, this is a bag without a hood and such a design is generally far less enclosed than a bag with a hood so temperature efficiency is not great. But there is a cinch cord around the neck, this prevents warmth losses. In view of all this, I have included it in my list of best 2-season bags.

Regarding the price, in my view, this is a very good price for what you get here. I see it as a great value for the money.
