Key features & benefits

  • One door & one huge vestibule.
  • Aluminum poles.
  • Full-coverage fly.
  • Very tall tent.

What this MSR Habitude 4 Tent is about

Here you have the smaller tent from the new Habitude series that MSR launched for the season 2020. This is a two-layer dome-style tent with a full-coverage fly. You can see it without the fly below, and in such a configuration it is fully freestanding and self-supporting.

With the fly on, you have to stake it down properly to be able to use its huge vestibule. The tent is with one door only, but it is huge and tall. The fly creates one vestibule that is unusually deep so you have plenty of storage area, and you can use this space also for cooking when it is raining outside.

Note that the tent is very tall for a dome with such capacity, with the inner peak height of 73 inches (185 cm). There is only one door here and one vestibule.

Ventilation

From the picture above you see that there is a lot of mesh on the inner tent and you have it also on the door. They have added a vent on the rear side of its fly, so this should be fine to fight condensation under such a huge fly.

In this video you have a short presentation of this Habitude 4 and 6 person tents series:

One person can set this tent up easily in just a few minutes, please see how this is done:

Who is it for

Regarding the space, the declared capacity is 4 people, and the tent provides 62.5 ft² (5.8 m²) of the inner area. There is also a large vestibule with an additional 23.5 ft² (2.2 m²). So the total protected area is 86 ft² (8 m²), and this means 21.5 ft² (2 m²) per person. This is quite generous and you have enough space for 4 people and the gear.

Below you can see its floor plan and dimensions, and what the manufacturer suggests for using the area. This is indeed an optimal way so all the users have the same access to the door. But note that this is a perfect square so you can use the floor as you wish.

Regarding the seasons and climate, this is a true 3-season tent that offers full protection in any climate. The structure is very strong and stable with its 7 intersection points of the poles, it is aerodynamic although quite tall for a dome.

Weight-wise, you have seen how much protected space this tent offers, so the weight of 12 lb 10 oz (5.72 kg) is quite normal. But this is not a tent for the trail, there are far lighter options for this purpose. So I see it best suited for car camping, and I have included it in my list of best 4-person car camping tents.

The packed size (L x D) 23 x 9 inches (58 x 23 cm) is really good and you can transport it even on a bicycle.

Materials

The poles, zippers & stakes

There are 4 aluminum 7000 series color-coded poles 11 mm in the diameter. The stakes are also aluminum. The zippers are very reliable smooth-glide YKK stainless steel, and this is the best you can have.

Fabric

You have a full rainfly and the fabric is a 68D ripstop DWR polyester with 1500 mm polyurethane coating. The inner tent is a 68D taffeta DWR polyester combined with a 40D nylon micro-mesh.

On the floor you have a 68D taffeta DWR polyester with 10000 mm polyurethane coating. If you need more protection from the ground, they have a footprint and you can order it here.

Inside, the tent has multiple storage pockets for each occupant, close to the floor and on the ceiling. The carry bag is nicely designed so getting the tent in is easy.
