Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Review – Car Camping Sleeping Pad

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

If you need a sleeping pad for car camping, this Exped Megamat Duo 10 Review is the text for you. Read about this award-winning insulated 10 cm thick pad with the R-value 9.5.

Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad.
Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad.

Key features & benefits

  • Incredibly comfortable; memory foam.
  • Huge dimensions.
  • Self-inflating.
  • Mini pump included.
  • Built in two sizes, medium and long-wide.

What is in the name

I guess I should write its full name as Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Insulated Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad, and then it becomes more clear what kind of the pad this is. The number 10 here is its thickness in centimeters, i.e., you have 3.9 inches of a soft and comfortable insulation under you.

The word Duo describes its double-wide nature, so indeed you have a huge pad with the dimensions 77.6 x 52 inches (197 x 132 cm).

Insulation

The declared R-value is 9.5, and the pad is suitable for temperatures as low as -48 °C (-54.4 °F). This is good for practically any environment. It insulates you from the ground but this does not imply it will heat you, so it is suitable for all seasons.

Who is it for

The Exped MegaMat 10 is ideal for any outdoor activity where you are not supposed to carry it long distances. It weighs 10.2 lb (4.63 kg) for the LW version, quite heavy as you see. So this is for regular camping at places with a motorized access, a tool for basecamps, etc. It offers lots of space for two adults or just for one person who wants exceptional comfort in the camp.

The length of the larger version is 77.6 inches (197 cm) so it is suitable even for very tall people. I have included it in my list of double pads for camping with double cots and double tent-cots; in such a combination this is a great item for couples and for family camping. You will find it also among the pads for car camping.

A bit more about the pad in this short video:

More about features

You have a memory foam layer inside, so it accommodates to the body nicely. The surface fabric is a stretchy TPU laminated material, the same on both sides. All materials used in the construction of this pad are Oekotex 100 certified.

Stuff sack

You will notice that the carry bag is huge and sidewinder type, so packing the pad in the bag is never an issue, there is enough space there for two pads of this size.

In the stuff sack, you have a pocket with the mini pump that is included in the package. You might be surprised at the size of the pump, but note that it is not supposed to be used to inflate the pad from the beginning. In fact, the pad will self-inflate in 10-15 minutes, and the mini pump is used only to add some extra air in, you will see this in the video below.

Valves

There are two of them, separate for inflation and deflation. The deflate valve is large and you need this for the volume you have inside of this pad. Please see how to inflate and deflate this pad; the person is using the single pad but the valves and the procedure are the same:

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

So, I would summarize this Exped Megamat Duo 10 Review by stressing again that this is one of the most comfortable double sleeping pad currently on the market. With the exceptional quality, you have an appropriate price tag, so it is rather expensive.

This is not a budget-friendly item, but this is a top-quality pad. There are hundreds of reports on Amazon alone and the average rating is incredibly high; there are no many outdoor items with such a score. See how I rate it:

I’m looking for a luxurious pad for car camping….only problem is I need one 38inches wide x 72 inches long. Is there any you know of that comes in close in width to 38″ ? All I have found are 30 inches or less…. or 49 inches plus. Your help is most appreciated.

Hi Toby, there is one with this width, the TETON Sports Outfitter XXL Camp Pad, it is 38 inches wide. But it is longer than what you need. I do not remember any other that would fit.
