This ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3-Person Tent is incredibly well built, suitable for all seasons, with double walls, two vestibules, a full-coverage fly, aluminum poles, and a good price.
Key features & benefits
- 4 Seasons tent.
- Full 2-walls design.
- 2 Asymmetric vestibules.
- Aluminum poles.
- Fly vents.
- Inner tent vents.
- Very reasonable price.
What this is about
This Tasmanian 3 person tent is the larger of the two in this mini-series of 4-season tents. This is a double-wall tent in the true sense, so there are no mesh sections here. The picture below shows how it looks without the fly. This is all taffeta.
As you realize, in such a configuration it is freestanding, there are two hub elements with Y-shaped poles on both sides, plus the middle pole. They all connect to the tent at the base where you have the usual grommets.
But when you add the fly, it is supported on both ends with two extra poles, and in such configuration you have two asymmetric vestibules. In this case it is not freestanding at all. The picture below shows the larger of the two vestibules with the door that rolls to the side:
The picture below shows the views from inside through this larger vestibule:
In the next picture, you see the smaller vestibule. It is with the centrally positioned zipper. Observe also the vents on the fly:
The whole structure may be easier to understand from the floor plan below where you also see the most important dimensions. As you realize, the tent is far from a simple square, it is more or less a hexagon.
There are two inner doors here, you can see one in the picture without the fly above. The doors themselves are fully double-layer structures with a zippered mesh door and a zippered panel door.
Ventilation
This tent is built for all seasons and this is why it must rely on vents. So there are 2 vents on the fly, they are equipped with Velcro tabs to keep them open.
On the inner tent you have two zippers that offer access to the inner vents, see the picture above. As you see in the picture below, these dual vents on the ceiling from inside are completely closable, with zippered panels and mesh. Note again that they have zippers even on the mesh, so you can open them completely to get to the vent on the fly without the necessity to get out of the tent.
In the case of cold weather, you can keep this all closed as in the picture. But in a warm environment you can open the vents (see the picture below) and also keep only mesh on the two doors.
So there is not much one could object here, this is a really nicely designed structure that will work in any weather conditions.
Materials
The poles
The main double-Y shaped pole is with two hub elements and shock-corded. There is also the central shock-corded loop pole, plus the two poles for the vestibules. This is all 7000 series aluminum with a diameter of 9.5 mm.
The fabric
The tent comes with a 75D 185T polyester fly with 1500 mm coating. They claim it resists UV damage and stays taut. The floor is also a 75D 185T poly taffeta but with 5000 mm coating. All the seams are factory-sealed.
Other features
- Extra-large #8 zippers are used.
- There is incredible storage space inside where you have huge mesh compartments on the whole length of the tent and this is on both sides.
- A gear loft is included.
- 7075 Aluminum stakes.
- Guy ropes are included.
Who is it for
Seasons-wise & climate-wise, usually the tents that are described as 4-season tents are most suitable for the cold weather only. So this tent is indeed very nicely designed for such situations, the picture below should demonstrate this.
But you have seen above what I had to say about its ventilation, so this tent will work well enough even in the warmer part of the year. If you need something for summertime mountaineering this would be a good option, but see below about the weight.
The structure is quite low and very aerodynamic, with the center height of 54 inches (137 cm). You have all stakes and ropes needed to secure it against winds. The waterproof rating is good, the materials are reasonably durable and strong. The tent will protect you in all situations. I have included it in my list of best winter camping tents, but it is more than that.
Space-wise, the tent is officially for 3 people and for this you have the inner area of 43.5 ft² (4 m²). This does not look much but the vestibules area is 21 ft² (2 m²), so you have the total protected area per person of 21.5 ft² (2 m²).
But bear in mind all those wall storage elements, they can accommodate lots of light stuff like clothes. There are no many tents with so much storage options, just look at it, you have them on both sides directly above the bath-tub floor:
Weight-wise, with its 9 lb 14 oz (4.48 kg) this tent is a bit heavy. You can realize this if you compare it with some other 3-person 4-season tents like this Snugpak Scorpion 3 tent or Big Agnes Copper Spur HV Expedition Tent 3 person. So you would not want to carry it unless you really have to. I have included it in my list of best 3 person tents for camping.
But the packed size is great, the tent’s carry bag is only (L x D) 20 x 7 inches (51 x 18 cm). So you can transport this tent even on a bicycle.
Price-wise, you will not find many true 4-season tents with such great features and at such a price.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons
In the summary of this ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3-Person Tent review, I would say that there are no many tents currently on the market that would match such a value/money combination. This is an excellent option for the price.
It is a bit heavier than some of its competitors, but this is a very long structure with two large vestibules that offer enough space for all the gear of 3 users. Fully recommended.
