Slumberjack Slumber Shack 4 Tent

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

The Slumberjack Slumber Shack 4 Tent is a versatile and very tall camping tent that can be used on its own or attached to a car, with a large awning and an interesting design.

Key features & benefits

  • Very tall tent.
  • Versatile.
  • Single-layer design.
  • Durable fabric.

What this Slumberjack Slumber Shack 4 Tent is about

So here you have a 4-person tent of a particular type. It is versatile because:

  • It can be used as a tent on its own, and in this case you have a huge flap/tarp that can create a huge awning area in front of the tent. The flap can also be staked to the ground and create a panel for privacy.
  • It can be attached to a car, see the picture below. In this case you create a large shade area connected with the car and tent.

The tent has an incredibly large door which is double-layer type so you have a full size mesh for excellent ventilation, plus a full size zippered panel.

There are also two side double-layer windows with mesh for ventilation and zippered panels for privacy. One is shown below, this is the view from inside. Observe the zippered panel that can be rolled under the window and fixed with a toggle.

The tent is incredibly tall for its overall size, the peak height is 83 in (211 cm). It is not freestanding, so it is essential that you are able to fix it to the ground and secure with guylines.

The tent has a bit unusual shape, but I would describe it as a cabin-type structure with its straight front and side walls. The picture below shows the view from the back and you get some idea about its frame.

Materials

The poles: You have a very unusual combination of 5 poles. They use steel for front vertical poles, aluminum for the brow pole above the door, and fiberglass used for the rest. The pictures below show some of its details that include 3-way hub elements and grommets for the roof poles.

The fabric: They use durable fabric, so the main body is a 68D polyester taffeta with a 1200 mm waterproof rating. The fly is the same material, and the floor is a 210D Poly Oxford  with 1000 mm waterproof rating. So the floor is thick but its waterproof rating is surprisingly low.

Ventilation

You have already seen mesh elements (on the door and its two windows). So as long as you can keep those openings with mesh, you will have perfect ventilation in this tent. They have also added a roof vent shown below. Note that this is a single layer design and it is important to have good air circulation.

But there are no floor vents, they are necessary to have wen you have to keep the openings with panels, this you have to do when it is raining.

Who is this Slumberjack Slumber Shack 4 Tent for

Regarding the best use & climate, they describe it as a 3-season tent and no doubt this is so. You can close the windows and the door when/if you feel cold. For summer camping it is simply excellent with such a great awning configuration. The picture below shows how it looks inside.

The tent is single layer and the waterproof rating is modest, this holds in particular for its floor. So I would avoid places with lots if rain and wind. I also dislike the fact that there are no floor vents.

Regarding the size, they describe it as a 4-person tent and for this you have 55 ft² (5.1 m²) of the floored area. This may be enough to put 4 sleeping pads on the floor and assuming you would keep your stuff in the car, it could be doable. But I see it as a perfect tent for couples or for parents with one small kid.

Regarding the weight, this is a heavy construction that weighs 19 lb (8.6 kg). The packed size 29 x 10 x 9 inches (74 x 25 x 23 cm) is also such that you need a car for transportation.

Regarding the price, the tent is very interesting and well-built, worth the investment.

So this Slumberjack Slumber Shack 4 Tent look really cool and it is versatile. The official capacity is best to be ignored, but this is almost always so, and use it as a tent for couples. I have included it in my list of best 4 person cabin tents for camping.
