Description

Patagonia mens Nano Puff Hoody.
Patagonia men’s Nano Puff Hoody.

Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody for men is one of the most popular insulated jackets on the market. This is a fully synthetic, very lightweight and extremely packable tool, suitable for any activity in cool weather.

The jacket is ideal for backpacking, climbing, and hiking adventures because it packs so nicely into its internal pocket. In cold weather conditions, you will use it as a mid-layer under your hardshell jacket. You will be happy to have it with you regardless if this is about high Alpine conditions or about around town use.

The insulation is among the best of the best, PrimaLoft Gold insulation, and the external fabric is lightweight polyester 22D shell with rectangular stitched baffling which you can see in pictures. This pattern is used here to fix the insulation layer in place. Observe that a very durable thread is used here for abrasion resistance.

The cuffs’ design is simple, with elastic only, and on the hem, you have a drawcord for adjustment. You have a full zipper on the front (note that they have a pullover version as well, see below), without external flap, but you have a wicking interior storm flap, and also a zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort.

The style

The jacket is designed to allow for some light layering underneath it, but do not expect much of it, it is quite snug although this is a regular fit. It is not stretchy, just to know if you need something very technical; in such a case better check their Nano-Air jacket or hoody.

Pockets

There are three pockets here, two are handwarmer zippered pockets on the sides and you also have one internal zippered pocket which doubles as its own stuff sack.

When you pack the jacket, you will see a carabiner clip-in loop so you can attach it to the backpack or to your climbing harness, see the picture.

The hood and collar

Obviously, you have a hood as the name of the jacket suggests. It is insulated just like the jacket, simple in style, without any adjustment elements, and with an elastic around the face. It is rather low-profile, but it is comfortable around the face, and it fits under a climbing helmet.

The collar is high, above the chin, and it is very pleasant, but when you zip it completely you do not have much freedom of movement.

Breathability

The Nano Puff jacket for men is quite breathable but not as breathable as the Nano-Air jacket. Breathability is enhanced by the stitches which you have all over the jacket. But this same feature makes it less warm.

Comfort

Both the external and internal layers are smooth and a bit slippery so the jacket fits nicely with an external shell layer and with anything that you put underneath it. The pockets are warm and deep. All in all, the jacket is very comfortable and pleasant. But the hood is not adjustable, and the same is with the cuffs.

Insulation and materials

The insulation used here is the PrimaLoft Gold Eco, the best ever produced by the PrimaLoft brand. They have Gold, Silver, and Black series and all of them are used by top brands in this industry. This is the lightest and the most thermally efficient of the three.

So you have 60 g Eco insulation which is 55% postconsumer recycled content, and this is combined with a 100% recycled polyester shell and liner. This insulation maintains 98% of warmth even when wet. The materials are with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. More about the PrimaLoft Gold you can read a bit more in my separate text.

Because it is all-synthetic, the jacket dries quickly when becomes wet or when you wash it, and after that, it will look like new again. It keeps its shape regardless of what you do with it.

The fabric used in this jacket is Bluesign approved. The Bluesign Technologies is a Switzerland-based organization that approves chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, for workers, and for the end customers. Patagonia is an official partner of the Bluesign network from 2007.

Who is it for

The Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody is a great option for mountaineers, climbers, backpackers, hikers, and for regular around town use, practically in any situation when the temperature drops down. Being so nicely packable and lightweight, you can always put it in your bag when you travel.

Summary & rating

In the conclusion of this Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody for men review to stress again, this is an incredibly packable and very versatile piece which you will always love to have at hand when the temperature drops. It is built to last long time, expensive but it is definitely worth the money. Patagonia is a responsible company, they build their items in an environmentally friendly manner, from recycled materials. I can fully recommend this jacket to anybody. See below how I rate it.

In the case of rain or for extremely cold and windy weather situations, you will need a shell jacket. Many of them are described in the site, and you can see them in this page. A nice combination with the hoody is this Torrentshell jacket for men from the same brand.
