Key features & benefits

  • Incredibly breathable.
  • Very comfortable.
  • Great insulation.
  • Very lightweight.
  • It holds the warmth even if it gets wet.

Description

As already pointed out above, this is a jacket built of incredibly advanced lightweight and breathable materials. With the weight of only 354 g (12.5 oz), this is a jacket with 60 grams of insulation, and it is still exceptionally stretchy.

Both shell and the insulation are stretchy and with DWR (durable water repellent) finish. The external fabric is 20D lightweight nylon ripstop. The jacket offers temperature regulation and full freedom of movement for a range of activities in cool and cold weather conditions.

Although it is with insulation (they use a very descriptive phrase ‘warm-when-wet insulation, based on their FullRange technology), the jacket is not so bulky and it is perfect as a mid-layer under a rain shell jacket. In such a combination this is a piece that will protect you even in harsh winter conditions.

I have seen a user describing it as ‘never too warm and never too cold, always just right’. This nicely summarizes the features of this jacket.

The jacket is with a full center-front zipper which has an internal draft flap and a zipper garage. On the cuffs, you have stretch binding; well everything is so stretchy in this jacket. On the hem, you have dual adjustment drawcords.

The fit is a bit slim but the jacket allows for lightweight and midweight layering, in particular in view of its stretchy character. Bear in mind that the jacket itself is meant to be a mid-layer under a shell jacket.

About breathability

The claimed breathability of the Patagonia Nano-Air pieces is 40 CFM (cubic feet per minute). This is a lot in view of its outer layer which is very water-resistant as well. Presently, it is unlikely to find something that could match such a combination of features available in this jacket.

Pockets

There are three low-profile external zippered pockets, two above-harness handwarmer pockets on the side and one left-chest pocket.

Here is a short promotion video by Patagonia about their Nano-Air jacket, please have a look:

Who is it for

The Nano Air jacket is ideal for any outdoor activity in cool or cold weather, as well as for hanging around the house or for the town use.

What it does not offer

This jacket is a soft-shell type, neither waterproof nor windproof. For such needs, you will use it with any shell jacket. This is an insulation jacket in full sense, but bear in mind it is exceptionally breathable and this does not go well with warmth.

In spite of its soft external fabric, water beads up and rolls off it incredibly well. It holds that way for several minutes even in a strong rain.

Summary & rating

In summary, to stress again that the Patagonia Nano-Air jacket for men is warm and exceptionally breathable, an excellent tool for cold weather use and as a mid-layer with any rain shell jacket. You can see many of these rain jackets presented in the site, including some from Patagonia, like the Torrentshell jacket for men and for women.

The price of the Nano-Air jacket is steep but it corresponds to its value, you can be sure about it. I can fully recommend this jacket. See how I rate it:
