If you are in the Italian Alps in summer time, you will want to visit Pass Pordoi in Dolomites, an attractive high elevation area with great car access roads.
Where is Pordoi Pass (Passo Pordoi) located?
Passo Pordoi is one of several great passes that are around Sella Group in the Dolomites in Italy. This is one of the most attractive areas in all Italian Alps.
The pass is roughly the same distance from Canazei on its south-west side, and Arabba on its east side. So these are the closest places for supplies.
The interactive map below shows access roads, simply zoom in and out to see more details:
So why visiting Passo Pordoi in Italy?
1. Climbing around Pordoi Pass
This is an excellent start point if you wish to climb peaks on the nearby Sella Group. Piz Boe is the highest peak there, so follow the link and read more about my tour.
From the car parking, you can be on the summit in less than 4 hours. So this is a great day tour, and you do not need any special equipment.
Ferrata routes: If you are more for ferratas, no worry, you have one great with the start point at the Pordoi Pass, one of the hardest in the Dolomites, the Piazzetta al Piz Boè. Here is a great video, have a look:
2. Sass Pordoi cable car
Even if you do not want to climb, you have a cable car that will take you to the summit of Sass Pordoi (2950 m, 9678 ft).
From there you can make long walks on a mountain plateau that is around 3000 meters high, and visit 2-3 mountain huts that are there. The picture below shows Piz Boe rifugio:
Here you can see how the cable car trip looks:
3. Passo Pordoi cycling
If you are a cyclist, then this is a paradise for you. From Arabba, you have 9.4 km (5.8 miles) with 33 turns if I remember correctly. The elevation gain is 637 m (2090 ft).
From what I can find, it seems that Passo Pordoi has made 39 appearances in the Giro d’Italia. This is one of several passes around Sella mountains, and you can make a round tour.
4. Hiking around Passo Pordoi
The Pordoi Pass is at an elevation of 2239 m (7346 ft), so this is a high place and even if you do not do anything when you are there, it is worth seeing.
You can get there by car and enjoy hiking around and admiring nearby peaks of the Sella Group and Marmolada. The area around the pass is mild and you have grass everywhere around.
So of you are with small kids, this is a perfect area to spend a day at high elevations and enjoy the views. Note that you have places at the pass for water and food, there are a few restaurants and hotels around.
Here is my recent driving to Pordoi Pass from Arabba:
5. Wingsuit BASE jumping

Accommodation
This is a very popular area and the same holds for all Dolomites. So there are many options to find a room, an apartment, a place in a car camp or tent camp.
I normally do my reservations through Booking.com and I can warmly recommend their services. In my case this is always about small studios with a fully equipped kitchen. Last time I was in Arabba which is at a stone throw from the Pordoi Pass.
In summary, Pass Pordoi in Dolomites is a beautiful area that has lots to offer no matter what you are interested in. I have been there a number of times, so let me know if you need more information, there is a comment box below. Check also my text about the nearby Sella Pass.
