Oboz Crest Boots – description

The upper

The upper is completely synthetic and with numerous overlays which you can see in the pictures. Their role is to increase the stability and durability of the boots, and you will agree that they look really cool. I love the fact that this is a synthetic material, it dries faster as usual and it requires less maintenance.

The collar is with very comfortable and flexible cushion. I find the height quite good, although for very heavy backpacks and rough terrain I would prefer something higher and more robust, but that is just me. The external fabric is highly porous, built that way on purpose, to enhance overall breathability.

The front is protected with a rubber overlay. The heel section is with a protective counter and a retention strap.

Waterproofness and breathability

The boots are highly breathable and completely waterproof. These features are based on the following three components:

  • The Oboz’s proprietary B-DRY waterproof tape-sealed polyurethane film bootie.
  • Hydrophobic upper materials.
  • Textile lining which wicks sweat away.

Lacing

Here you have a very functional speed lace system, visible in pictures. It looks really nice, it is easy to use and very convenient. But the boots come with a spare pair of regular laces.

Midsole

There is a lot of engineering here, aimed at impact absorption. You have a compression-molded EVA layer, but on the heel, they have also added a lightweight PU plug with the purpose of enhancing impact absorption and shock resistance. This is all for an extra comfort in the place where it is essential.

If you continue to the middle and the front section, you find a built-in ESS (EVA super skin) plate. This is an extra piece of armor under the foot, aimed at protecting against sharp objects.

Insole

The layer in direct contact with the feet is a moisture-wicking material that helps to keep feet dry and comfortable. In the heel area, you have a high-density stiff material, profiled in such a way as to cradle the heel and keep it in place. Such a design is to reduce chances for blisters.

The front section of the insole is with perforations for ventilation. On the underside of the insole, you have two additional EVA pads for impact absorption. Medium-density EVA is throughout the rest of the insole.

Outsole

Here you have Thru-Hiker outsole, a tactile carbon rubber bottom not particularly aggressive in style, but with a great balance between a good surface contact which you would want on a smooth rocky surface, and still with lugs deep enough to give good traction on loose trail terrains.

Thru-Hiker outsole with carbon rubber. There is a map molded in the bottom and it features the north and south terminus of the CDT trail.

Oboz Crest vs Oboz Bridger

Here is a short comparison between the Crest boots and yet another famous model from Oboz, the Bridger Mid boots described in my separate text:

  Oboz Bridger
Oboz Crest
Waterproof yes, BDry
yes, BDry
Upper Material all-leather all-synthetic
Eyelets 6 6
Weight, kg 1.02 0.96

Both boots are comfortable but the Bridger model is all-leather and this is the main difference. Surprisingly, at the moment of writing this text, the price for both models is exactly the same. To see more please follow the link.

About Oboz

Oboz is a really outstanding company, so much that I have written a separate text about this brand. So please have a look here to see more.

Summary & rating

To conclude this Oboz Crest Mid BDry Hiking Boots for men review, this is a top-quality hiking item, all synthetic so it dries quickly, and very reliable. The technology behind their waterproofness and breathability has already been used in other celebrated Oboz’s boots and shoes, like in the Bridger model mentioned above. I trust the brand behind these boots and I can fully recommend them to anybody.

The color is not of big importance for me, but indeed there is only one option available, this is why I add it to the list of cons. See below my rating for these boots:
