If you need a freestanding, pleasant, reliable, and very tall car camping tent with quality aluminum poles, this Nemo Wagontop 4p Tent review is the right text for you. Keep reading.

Key features & benefits

  • Freestanding tent.
  • Very tall.
  • One door.
  • Aluminum poles.
  • Removable vestibule.
  • Panoramic windows.
  • Single-wall tent.

What this is about

This Nemo Wagontop 4 tent is the smallest in the series that include also a 6 person and an 8 person tent. The series has been around for several years, I remember when it appeared for the first time on the market, but it has already been slightly modified so this is the latest version of the tent. You can easily distinguish it from the previous one which was more green, the new version is yellow. All three tents in the series are shown in the picture:

This is a freestanding construction due to its unique poles that are Y-shaped on both ends. So when you place their ends into the ground grommets, the structure is already self-supporting. It becomes even more stable when you attach the tent to the frame.

The picture below shows how it looks from the side, this is a view without its removable vestibule. Note that these two shock-corded poles are interchangeable. Each of them has 2 hub elements. There are intersection points on the sides, one is visible above, and this makes the tent stable and sturdy.

It is difficult to put it in any group, I would describe it as a hybrid between a tunnel tent and a cabin tyle tent. Note that it is very tall, you have 80 inches (203 cm) peak height and this is remarkable for a tent with such a relatively small area.

I mentioned its vestibule, so you can remove it and what is left in this case is shown in the picture below where you have the front view with its huge door. Note that you can unzip the door and store it below, there is a pocket above the floor for this purpose.

The picture below shows how the door is slightly protected with a brim above. Observe also that there is a mesh window above the door and it is fully covered and protected.

A similar high window is on the back, you can see it in the picture below. The two windows on the longer sides of the tent are lower and they offer nice views around.

With the poles from outside, this tent provides a dry setup. This means you can pitch it even in the rain and the inner will be protected, you attach the tent to the frame which is above the tent. Note that there is no inner canopy here, this is a single-wall tent.

The frame is very unique and the tent has steep walls, so you have lots of volume inside. The picture below shows in detail how the width changes with height. As you realize, you have a standing height throughout nearly the entire interior space so this is a real luxury.

Lots of volume.
Lots of volume.

The nearly-trapezoid area in the picture above is the vestibule, this is a useful space to store your dirty boots and to keep all your gear, to use for cooking and for sitting.

Materials

The poles are really thick, you have a 14.5 mm diameter here, and this is aluminum. All stakes and guylines needed to secure the tent are included in the package.

The fabric is a 75D polyester with a 1500 waterproof rating, and the floor is a 300D polyester with the same waterproof rating. This is quite a small waterproof rating value for a floor but this should be enough.

Other features

  • There are several storage pockets above the floor and also under the ceiling.
  • A lantern loop is on the ceiling.
  • Accessories:
    • Note that they have an accessory Nemo Wagontop 4p Sunshade that can be ordered separately.
    • Wagontop footprint is also available separately.
    • Nemo Victory blanket is also available.

Please see more in this short video:

Who is it for

Regarding capacity, the tent is officially for 4 people and for this you have 69.4 ft² (6.45 m²) of the floored area. This is already good, but note that there is also the mentioned vestibule that adds 26.9 ft² (2.5 m²) of the covered and protected space. The picture below shows the floor and the dimensions, and what the manufacturer suggests for using the floor space.

Regarding seasons & climate, this is a reliable 3-season tent, it allows for ventilation through its mesh windows that are on all 4 sides, and the inner door is deep under the vestibule so you can keep it open for ventilation. But the tent is very tall and boxy, and I would not use it in very windy places.

Regarding weight, the tent is heavy with its 20 lb 1 oz (9.1 kg), so this is not something to carry around. The packed size could be described as moderate, the carry bag measures (L x D) 27 x 10 inches (69 x 25 cm). So this is a car camping tent.

Regarding price, it is steep, this brand is not known for low prices, but it is known for its quality products.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In the summary of this Nemo Wagontop 4p Tent review, I wish to stress again that this is a top-quality outdoor shelter from a globally known brand. The design is unique and the tent is pleasant with lots of volume and with useful storage features. This all comes at a price, but if you can afford it, the tent is worth the investment. I have included it in my list of best 4 person car camping tents.
