What this Big Agnes Parkview 63L Backpack is about

Here you have the largest backpack from a group of packs they launched recently for the season 2022. These are their first backpacks ever, and they build gender-specific packs.

So this is a pack for men, and there is also a corresponding pack for women, the Big Agnes Women’s Garnet 60L Backpack. In the mid-size range, you have the Big Agnes Prospector 50L Pack for Men and the Big Agnes Sun Dog 45 L Pack for women. Finally, they have two unisex smaller day packs.

The pack is a top loading type, with a classic lid and an expandable collar. This adds extra 10 liters of volume when needed. Note that this is the only access point, there is no bottom compartment or any other access.

This is a bit surprising because several much smaller packs in this first series have an extra access point, and this even when it was not essential. But it is missing here where you might want to have it because the pack is very deep.

There is an inner hydration sleeve large enough for a 3L bladder (not included), equipped with a bladder hook. Hose clippers are on the harness.

The lid is removable, the picture below, so you can use the pack without it. But then you lose two pockets, and the pack does not look particularly attractive to me. 

Suspension system

The pack has an aluminum perimeter frame, and this is accompanied with an anatomical back-panel with a body mapped foam for a precise fit. So this is a deign where the pack stays closer to the body.

The back panel has some ventilation channels, but you should not expect much ventilation in such a design. The picture below shows how this looks:

You have a nicely padded shoulder harness, a sliding adjustable sternum strap, and load lifters. The torso length is adjustable, they use a ladder type attachment system with three different positions, see how this looks:

The hip belt is very wide and this is a split V-shaped profile which they call the Open Range hip belt. So there are two separate parts and each has its own stabilizer strap, see the picture below. With this you have the best possible hip hugging.

Pockets

The pack comes with the following:

• 2 Large stretch mesh side pockets.
• Front quick-stash large pocket.
• One front-top zip pocket with a key keeper.
• 2 Pockets in the lid.
• 2 Large and removable hip belt pockets, not shown in the pictures.

Attachments and straps

Here is what you have:

• The Hoist Compression system. This means one compression strap on each side. It zig-zags from the bottom to the top, those are the orange straps in the pictures. Basically, this means that instead of the usual two side straps that can be adjusted separately, here you have one pull loop on the top. Is this better? I am not so sure.  
• You have two long daisy chains on the front, see the pictures.
• Top grab handle for easy movability.
• Dual bottom loops for an ice axe and trekking poles, paired with bungees higher on the pack, see the picture below.

Bonus

This pack comes with their 7 L Trash Can for collecting litter on the trail, see below how it looks. If you would buy it separately, this would cost around $25.

Materials

They use the same fabric in all packs. So this is a puncture and tear resistant micro-fine denier yarn Mipan regen robic nylon with a solution-dyed ripstop grid. The solution dyeing means that pigment is added directly to the molten plastic solution before the fiber is made. It is with an environmentally sustainable coating with a 1500 mm rating. 

The pack is all from recycled materials, and it is GRS certified, where the letters mean Global Recycle Standard. On the bottom you have a heavy-duty twill fabric for maximum reinforcement and increased durability.

Who is it for

Regarding the size, with 3845 + 610 in³ (63 + 10 l) you have plenty of space for gear. The + volume is when you expand the collar. When you combine this all with its attachment options, then you realize you can carry a lot in this pack.

Regarding the weight, the volume-to-weight ratio here is simply excellent, it is around 41 liters/kg for the lighter of the two packs (the numbers are below), so this is an ultralight pack. This is a pack ideal for hikers and backpackers.
