The Eureka Kohana 4 Person Tent is a dome-type shelter with a full-coverage fly, 2 vestibules, and aluminum poles, for full protection in a 3-season use.
Key features & benefits
- Dome-style tent.
- Aluminum poles.
- Full-coverage fly.
- 2 Doors & 2 vestibules.
- Very good waterproof rating.
- Optimal ventilation.
What this is about
Here you have the smaller tent in the series of two that includes also the Kohana 6 tent. The picture below shows how it looks without the fly so you can better understand its structure. This is a very typical dome construction with two X-crossed poles.
There are two large doors on the opposite sides. Note that the peak height is 56 inches (142 cm) so the tent is moderately high for its size. Without the fly, it is freestanding so you can rotate it and move to short distances. But see below how it looks with its full-coverage fly on.
There are two large vestibules here, and they are with parallel zippers so that you have a central flap and side flaps, this allows for various configurations. Below you can see how it looks in an awning configuration, you can use your trekking poles for this:
You can roll the central flap and fix it above the door, this is shown in the top picture above. But you can also roll all three flaps and keep them out of way:
You have a nicely designed carry bag shown below, it has a wide zippered opening and a carry strap. The size in the carry bag is around (L x D) 24 x 8 inches (61 x 20 cm):
Ventilation
With such full coverage fly, ventilation and condensation can be a problem. But they have done the job properly.
- First, the canopy is with lots of mesh for air circulation, you have seen this in the picture without fly shown above.
- Second, they have added vents. You have parts of the fly on two sides that look like classic vents, one is shown in the picture below left. You have to stake it out and this will allow free entry for air. There are also vents on vestibules, one is shown below.
- Third, the tent also comes with what they call the High/Low venting design with the flaps of the vestibules. The picture below shows this, the flap can be unzipped from the ground for extra air flow. This can work even if it is raining because inner doors are deep under the vestibules.
So with all these features ventilation can hardly be better in a tent of this type.
Other details
- There are 6 pockets.
- A lantern loop is on the ceiling.
- Stakes and guylines are included.
Materials
The poles
You have already seen the two main poles, but there are also two shorter cross poles that add volume to the vestibules. They cross the dome on the top and they attach to the fly, there are small pockets underneath the fly where you place the ends of the poles.
All 4 poles are 9.5 mm in diameter, and this is a 7000 aluminum alloy. The attachment of poles to the tent is through corner grommets, clips, and the usual Velcro tabs.
Please see a bit more about the tent in this short video:
The fabric
The canopy is a 75-denier 190T polyester and a 40D polyester no-see-um mesh. The fly is the same denier fabric but it has a PU coating that gives it a 3000 mm waterproofness.
The floor is a 150D polyester with a PU coating and waterproofness of 2500 mm. The design is bathtub style.
Eureka! Kohana 4 Person Tent Footprint
Note that they have a Eureka! Kohana 4 Person Tent Footprint that can be ordered separately. The picture below shows how it looks under the tent, as you realize it is large so that it provides a floor for both vestibules.
In the video below you can see how to set the tent up:
Who is it for
Regarding the capacity, the tent is officially for 4 people, and for this you have a floor area of 60 ft² (5.6 m²). Per person, this gives 15 ft² (1.4 m²).
I already mentioned the two vestibules, so they add 16 + 16 ft² (1.49 + 1.49 m²) and the total covered area is 92 ft² (8.38 m²). Per person, this means 23 ft² (2.1 m²). This is very good, almost a luxury.
Regarding seasons and climate, this is a true 3-season tent and it will protect you in any weather conditions in such use. The waterproof rating is excellent, the fly offers full coverage for you and for the gear, and the poles are high quality. The structure is relatively low and very aerodynamic for great performance in windy places.
Weight-wise, the tent can be described as lightweight in view of its 9 lb 3 oz (4.17 kg). This is not to carry on the trail, so I have included it in my list of best 4 person tents for car camping.
Note that the packed size is excellent (L x D) 24 x 8 inches (61 x 20 cm), so you can transport it even on a bicycle and on a motorbike.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons
To summarize this Eureka Kohana 4 Person Tent review, they have again built a great and reliable shelter for 3-season use. You have very good materials, the tent offers lots of storage area for users and for their gear. It can be carried on the trail if users share the weight, but it is better suited at places where you would not have to carry it yourself. Fully recommended. The tent is included in my list of best Eureka 4 person tents.
Please see how I rate this tent, it scores great in all criteria:
