Kelty Rumpus 4 Person Tent

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

This Kelty Rumpus 4 Person Tent is a 3-season dome-style structure with a very large vestibule and a full-coverage fly that should protect you in any weather conditions.

Key features & benefits

  • One door & one vestibule.
  • Full-coverage fly.
  • Fiberglass poles.

What this Kelty Rumpus 4 tent is about

Kelty launched this tent as a new series of two tents for the season 2021, the other in the series is a 6-person tent with slightly different features. So you have a very typical dome structure supported by two main poles. Below you can see how it looks without the fly.

When used without the fly, the tent is fully freestanding. It is moderately tall for its size, so you have a 58 inches (147 cm) peak height. The picture below shows how it looks with a happy family inside.

There is one door only, and you can see it in the previous pictures. The tent looks very different with the fly on. The picture below shows its side view, so you realize that it has an extra pole that supports a vestibule that is on the left in the picture. Obviously, to have it fully functional, the fly must be fully staked, so the tent is not freestanding.

The vestibule is with dual zippers on the sides so you can roll it up and fix it above the door as shown below.

The poles

There are 3 poles and this is fiberglass of a particular type, a wrapped construction that should be more durable than the ordinary fiberglass. The tent is with what they call the Quick Corners design for pole attachment in the corners.

So you have deep and narrow pockets in the corners, see one below, where you place the end of a pole. They introduced this design a couple of years ago. You can see it also in their Kelty Towpath 3 Tent. The picture without the fly above shows that you have clips for attachment on the canopy. The usual color-coding is in place for an easy setup.

The fabric

Everything here is a moderately durable 68D polyester with a reasonable 1200 mm waterproof rating. All seams are fully taped. You have already seen that the canopy is with a mesh.

Other features

  • You can use a pair of trekking poles and create an awning with the vestibule flap.
  • Gear loft loops are inside.
  • Footprint available (sold separately).
  • There are also four mesh pockets in the corners, one is shown in the picture above.
  • Shark-mouth carry bag equipped with an adjustable shoulder strap for convenient carrying short distances:

Who is this Rumpus 4P Tent for

Regarding the size, the official capacity is 4 people. The inner floored area is 60 ft² (5.6 m²) so this is a moderate 15 ft² (1.39 m²) per person. The vestibule is shown below and you realize it is huge, you have an additional 45 ft² (4.2 m²).

In other words, the total protected area is 105 ft² (9.8 m²), and per person, this means 26.25 ft² (2.45 m²). This is good enough for parents with one or two kids, and I see it also perfect for couples with their dog(s).

Very large vestibule.

Seasons-wise & climate-wise, I would describe it as a 3-season tent, but indeed it is better suited for a warmer part of the year, and in areas where you expect lots of rain. With such a fly you will be completely protected. You can see below how nicely covered it is when the vestibule is fully closed.

You have already seen its height, so it is moderately high and it is aerodynamic. It will work well in windy places.

Regarding the weight, the tent weighs 13 lb 1 oz (5.92 kg) so this is moderately light but not to be carried on the trail. The packed size is 25 x 8 x 7.5 inches (64 x 20 x 19 cm) and this is very good, small enough to be transported even on a motorbike. I have included it in my list of best car camping 4 person tents.

Please see a bit more in this short video:

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In summary, the best feature of this Kelty Rumpus 4 Person Tent is its large vestibule that enormously extends its protected space. With a pair of trekking poles, you can extend it even more and have a nice awning for sitting and cooking.

This is a reliable tent with a large fly that covers it completely, so you will be fully protected no matter where you use this tent.
