Marmot Torreya 4-Person Tent

Last Modified: 12/04/2023

The Marmot Torreya 4-Person Tent is a top-quality camping tent with DAC aluminum poles and some unique features for full protection in a 3-season use.

Key features & benefits

  • Aluminum DAC poles.
  • Very strong frame.
  • Awning configuration.
  • Unique features.

What this is about

This Marmot Torreya 4 is smaller in their mini-series of two tents that also includes the Torreya 6 tent. This is a very strong dome-style structure created by 4 thick poles that create 5 intersection points. The roof segments are slightly pre-bent and this adds a bit of shoulder space in the tent. The picture below shows the tent without the fly so you can better understand its structure.

The tent has a full-coverage fly that creates two asymmetric vestibules. Below you can see it from the front with the fully closed larger vestibule. The vestibule flap is with two parallel zippers on the sides so this allows for the awning presented in the top picture above. Note that the awning poles are included.

You can also roll the flap up and fix it with toggles under the roof, this is shown in the picture below. Observe that the vestibule is floored, so you can keep your gear protected from the groundwater and mud.

Note also that the tent is quite tall for its overall size, the peak height is 64 inches (163 cm). There are two doors and they are deep under the vestibules. One peculiar detail you can see in the picture above, the tent has a pair of triangular windows on the fly. They are equipped with zippers.

Yet another unique detail is visible in the picture below, you have a long series of loops above the door to hang your stuff and to keep it off the ground. They are under the sleeve that is directly above the door.

You also have a number of storage pouches, some are shown in the picture below. As you realize, this includes bottle holders, and this is rarely seen in tents of this type.

Materials

The tent can be described as almost fully self-supporting and freestanding. But you have a full set of guylines and stakes shown in the picture below, so do not ever miss securing the tent properly.

The poles: You have them 4 and this is top-quality DAC DA17 aluminum with 12 mm diameter. DAC is the leading manufacturer of tent poles, and the DA17 type is developed specifically for larger camping tents. Note that everything is color-coded for an easy pitch.

The poles attach to the tent in the usual way, grommets on the ground, clips on the sides, and sleeves on the roof. Such sleeves distribute pressure and this makes the structure even stronger, just to know if you do not like sleeves in general.

The fabric: Here is what you have:

  • The canopy fabric is 68D 100% polyester taffeta with 1800 mm waterproof rating, F/R. This is combined with 40D 100% polyester No-See-Um mesh, F/R.
  • The floor fabric is a catenary cut 70D 100% polyester taffeta 2000 mm, F/R.
  • The fly is a 68D 100% polyester taffeta with a 1500 mm rating, F/R

So these are all durable materials, and all seams are taped. Note also that the zippers pulls are particularly nicely designed as you can see in the picture below.

Ventilation

The tent is with mentioned mesh areas on the canopy, the doors are also with mesh in the upper part, and they have added vents in the vestibule. You can see them in the pictures above. In addition to this, there are those fly windows that you can keep open whenever the sky is clear. There are no floor vents but I do not think this is a big deal in such a design.

Who is this Marmot Torreya 4P Tent for

Capacity-wise, the tent is officially for 4 people. For this you have 71.9 ft² (6.7 m²) of the inner floored area. This gives 18 ft² (1.67 m²) per person. The two vestibules add 29 ft² (2.7 m²), so the total protected area is quite large 100.9 ft² (9.4 m²).

Seasons-wise & climate-wise, this is a true 3 season shelter and it will protect you in any weather conditions. The profile is aerodynamic and the structure is very strong, so no worry if you are forced to camp in windy places.

Regarding the weight, the tent is quite heavy with its 14 lb 9 oz (6.6 kg). They also give the minimum weight, but this is meaningless because you would not carry this tent anywhere.

The packed size is (L x D) 28 x 12 inches (70 x 30 cm) so the tent is bulky. The picture below shows its carry bag.

How do the fly windows work or open? Are they zippered or velcro? It is an interesting design.
    Thank you

Thank you for the review. How would you compare this tent to the REI Basecamp 4? The Torreya has the better poles, DAC ones and the REI is a proven model.
Curious to get your opinion since you have done very nice and thorough reviews on both.
    Thank you

My rating is the same and both are great tents. The Marmot tent has more features, I like its floored vestibule. On the other hand the REI tent is better ventilated. So it may depend on where you use them. I think I would go for the Marmot tent if I would have to choose only one.
