What this Coleman Rock Springs Tent is about
This is a tent that was originally built for the EU market, and it has been there for one decade already. Only recently it appeared in the US market.
So this is an extended dome tent with a full-coverage fly. It is not freestanding because of its vestibules, so you have to stake it properly to be fully functional. The picture below shows its floor plan and the dimensions so you get an idea of what it offers.
The tent has two doors and two asymmetric vestibules. The larger vestibule has an extra pole for support and here you also have 2 solid translucent windows, see the picture below. Its door is with dual zippers on the sides and you can roll it up like the picture below shows, but you can also create an awning with a pair of included poles.
Having an option for such an awning is always great because it extended the useful space, you can sit in the shade of the awning when the sky is clear, and you can also cook there.
Note also that you have a linked-in floor under the vestibule, see the picture below, so this is convenient to keep your stuff protected from the wet ground and mud.
The other vestibule is smaller and simple, with a central zipper, the picture below shows the view through the tent from this back side.
The fly is massive and its pole sleeves are from outside. This allows for a dry setup, you pass the poles and raise the tent while the inner tent remains protected all the time. This is very convenient to have when you pitch the tent while it is raining. This structure is similar to the Eurohike Avon DLX 3 Man Tent. Note that the inner tent can be detached when you pack the tent if you wish, but this is not necessary.
The inner tent has 2 doors and both are the double-layer type with a full-size zippered mesh and a full-size zippered panel layer. So again, this is a luxury when you see the price of this tent.
The inner tent’s floor is fully sewn-in and sealed. The picture above shows how it looks. The inner tent is not particularly tall, you have 45.3 inches (115 cm) inner peak height.
Ventilation
All is nicely done here. As mentioned, the inner doors are with full-size mesh, and they are also fully protected so you can keep them all the time with mesh only. You can always have enough airflow from the ground under the fly even if the vestibules are closed.
To fight condensation, they have also added two roof vents with Velcro stiffeners, you can see them in the pictures above.
Materials
The poles: So this is a budget tent and the poles are fiberglass as expected. There are three of them and they attach to the tent’s base with the usual pin-and-ring system, and higher you have sleeves. Color-coding is in place, there is nothing to guess.
The fabric: The shell is a polyester with a 2000 mm PU coating, you will never need more, and all seams are taped. The inner tent is a breathable taffeta and no-see-um mesh. The floor is a durable polyethylene, such materials are always highly waterproof. It is a bathtub style so you are safe from splashes.
Please see more in this video, note that this is the 4-person version but the features are the same:
Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for three users and it offers lots of space. So you have the inner floored area of 41 ft² (3.8 m²), plus the two vestibules so the total covered area is 60.3 ft² (5.6 m²), and this means 20.1 ft² (1.86 m²) per person. But this is not only about the square feet, the space is nicely organized and functional with two vestibules, two doors, plus the mentioned awning.
Regarding seasons & climate, the tent is with a great waterproof rating, a full fly, relatively low, and aerodynamic, so it will protect you in windy and rainy places. On the other hand, it is ventilated and pleasant when you have to keep all the openings closed. This is a true 3-season tent.
Regarding the weight, it weighs 11.7 lb (5.3 kg) so this is not something to carry anywhere. Note also that the packed size is very good, it measures 20.5 x 6.7 x 6.6 inches (52 x 17 x 17 cm), so you can transport it even on a bicycle.
