Rover Tent – description
Those who follow Kelty and use their outdoor equipment know well that they have a lot of stuff built in old style, but with new and advanced materials. Just have a look in this text about backpacks with external frames with several of Kelty’s packs in the list. So Kelty is really keeping the tradition alive and this is why many of us admire this brand.
The same story is here with this Rover tent, launched in the beginning of 2017. Just see the pictures, this is how most people imagine a tent in its most classic shape, an A-shape entrance, and simple roof construction in the same style. More classic it can’t possibly be.
In view of its classic shape, the construction and setup are very simple. So, you have two front steel poles that create the mentioned A-frame, and one shorter pole on the back. Yes, you are reading correctly, it is steel. The setup procedure is presented in the video below, no need to say more about this here.
Just to stress, with such a classic design, this is not a free-standing tent, so you need to do all the usual steps and to stake it to the ground. So bear this in mind if by any chance you plan to use it on a rocky surface, on concrete, on a frozen surface, or on sand and gravel. It will not work.
The ventilation should be good enough, there is a back mesh window (shown in the picture above), and the front mesh door, so you have a tunnel effect that should work.

Pros & cons
Here is my short summary:
The price of the Rover tent at the moment of writing the text is around $90, please follow the links to check for the updates.
I already mentioned the fact that the tent needs to be anchored to the ground. This is not necessarily an objection, just bear this in mind as its feature.
Kelty Rover tarp
So there is no vestibule, this is a part of this tent’s classic design. But Kelty has taken care of this in a great way. They have built the Kelty Rover tarp that fits the tent nicely and it creates a huge awning in front of the tent, see the picture below.
This is a great combination, you get a lot of extra covered space for a pleasant sitting in the shade outside of the tent, and this is the area where you can cook and enjoy the day. You can order it separately through the given link. Its price at the moment of writing this text is around $40. Combined with the mentioned price of the tent itself, this all still sounds really reasonable.

Comparison with competitors
I have many tents described in this site, but it is really not easy to find a proper tent for comparison. The Kelty Rover tent is simply too classic shape to be compared with all those modern design tents. Nevertheless, I give a couple of very popular tents from other brands, so that you get some feeling:
*This is at the entrance. The tent is lower on the back side.
If you just go for features, the Rover has no many. But again, this is something special and you cannot rate this tent in the standard way. For people with nostalgic feelings, this is far more than just a tent. So my own rating is a sort of compromise. Realistically, I should rate it lower, but from an emotional perspective and in view of the extra options with the included tarp, one could rate it far higher. So it is up to you.
At the moment of writing this text, the prices of the three tents are, respectively, $130, 90, 58. As you see, the Rover tent provides quite enough space for a reasonable price.
Please feel free to add your rating here.
To summarize this text about the Kelty Rover Tent, this is a wonderful tool for car campers and for various outdoor events. It does not offer as much as modern tents, some features are surely missing, but hey, this is a special tool, designed to be different.
For me personally, it is worth much more than the price money. What would you say if I tell you that 31 years ago, I was with my wife on our honeymoon tour in a tent that looked really similar to this Rover thing? And during the night there was a bear passing by our camp, we could even hear it breathing heavily. This was in Plitvice, what is in Croatia nowadays. At that time, this was in Yugoslavia. You have no idea what I am talking about? Then you are too young and cannot understand how I feel about this tent, but I hope you can still admire its design.
You might want to compare this classic tent with yet another in the same style, The North Face Tuolumne 2 tent. But, if you want something more modern, please see this very new model launched these days, the Kelty Horizon 2 tent.
So, thank you for reading. I hope you like the text and you like the tent. In any case, let me know what you think, there is a comment box below. If you are an old-timer like me, you surely have a lot to say about such tents. I wish you a pleasant day.
