Key features & benefits

  • Cotton canvas fabric.
  • 2 Doors.
  • Great ventilation.
  • YKK zippers.

What is in the name

So here you have a classic shaped A-profile tent, and this is behind the word Retro in the name. I had something similar more than 35 years ago when I went with my wife on a camping trip for the first time, but that was a synthetic tent. Here you have a breathable canvas construction and this is a single-wall design.

They use the word Cabin in the official name, so this is mainly because of its vertical walls on the two shorter sides. The picture below shows its floor plan:

The tent is not freestanding, so it is necessary to stake it down properly before adding the poles. There are two doors here on the opposite sides, the picture below shows the inner view.

The side view below shows its roof shape when the guylines are properly tensioned. Observe that the roof protects the long vents/windows that you have on both sides. There are also small awnings above the doors so this is more or less a dry entry design.

Materials

The fabric: The roof and the sides are a cotton, they use the phrase “blended cotton cloth” so it is not clear to me if there is polyester added or not. But this is a naturally breathable material, and they write it reasonably balances water repellency and ventilation. But they also write it is not recommended to use it in the rain for a long time.

The floor is a ‘wear-resistant PVC composite cloth’, it is a bit unclear what they mean by the word composite. There are large mesh sections for ventilation, you have seen them in the pictures above. Below you have a close view of the mesh.

The picture shows also its high quality YKK zippers, so these are among the best you can have in such a tent.

The poles: There are two of them and this is an aluminum alloy. You also have a full set of 10 guylines and 20 stainless steel stakes, see all the elements here:

A reinforced webbing is everywhere around, and the tent looks really well-done, see some details:

Ventilation

The tent is naturally breathable, but they have added long vents/windows on its longer sides, the picture below show one side. So here you have a mesh plus panels.

Who is it for

Regarding the best use & climate, the tent is an excellent option for warm weather camping because it is so ventilated and breathable. But it is also closable so there is no doubt it will perform well in a year round use.

Their statement about waterproofness should be take seriously so it is best to do weathering several times at home and to see how it behaves after all this.

Regarding the size, you have the floored area of 60.3 ft² (5.6 m²), and the dimensions are such that you have enough place for two sleeping pads and for your gear. The picture shows it with two cots inside:

You can also put a large double-wide sleeping pad:

Regarding the weight, the tent is heavy, as expected from a canvas tent, so it weighs 27.12 lb (12.3 kg). The packed size is such that you can transport it even on a bicycle.

Regarding the price, it is steep but this is a beautifully designed classic shape tent and with great materials, so it is worth the investment.
