The North Face Venture jacket for men is a 2.5 layer ripstop nylon waterproof, breathable, windproof, seam-sealed jacket. It is suitable for not so hard outdoor activities, and also for around-town use, in all seasons.
The Venture jacket looks good and stylish, you can see this from the pictures and from the video. The material is relatively durable, and it is ripstop.
The hood is attached, helmet-compatible, and completely adjustable, with 3 points of adjustability. This implies one drawcord with a toggle on the back, and one on each side of the face. On the front, you have a very useful brim and a soft chin guard.
On the cuffs, you have velcro tabs, but no elasticity there. Farther up along the sleeves, you have good size pit zips with storm flaps. This is something you might need for ventilation, but for my own tours in the Alps, this feature is usually not so important. On the hem, you have an elastic cord with toggles on both sides.
The jacket has two hand (mesh) pockets, zipped and with storm flaps. These are the only outside pockets but they are of a really good size and very useful. The left pocket also serves as a stuff suck, the jackets stows completely in it, see the picture below.
But there is a smart detail added in the design. The lower parts of these two pockets are sewn onto the fabric, so you effectively have 2 extra internal pockets. You can use them to keep maps or anything similar.
The front zipper is with a double storm flap, equipped with velcro tabs plus a snap button on the bottom. I myself do not like this double flap design, find it a bit annoying, but it has its purpose here because the zip itself is not waterproof.
The jacket has no mesh liner inside. This is why it is 2.5 layer; this half-layer is a film added to the membrane to protect it from abrasion. I must say that I prefer a mesh liner.
Breathability and waterproofness
Breathability of this jacket is 750-800 g/m²/24 hours average. So breathability is definitely not its strongest feature. The pit zips help, and the same holds for the mesh-type hand pockets. But the jacket is not for very hard physical activities, bear this in mind if you are in the process of buying a jacket.
Waterproof rating of this jacket is 25 PSI minimum after 20 launderings. To understand the meaning, 1 PSI is equivalent to 704 mm.
On the other hand, a hurricane rain is in the range 10 PSI. In the usual scale which has 5 different groups, I-V, this jacket is at the border between the highest groups IV and V. So you will be safe with it.

Pros and cons
Here is my summary of cons and pros, obviously I have them many more in the second group:
This jacket is very popular and this is seen from the number of reviews it has received from Amazon customers. You will realize that people are complaining that it is too thin. This is a 40D jacket, so imagine what they would say for those jackets like Marmot Essence with 20D only, and 179 grams!
Bear in mind, this is a thin rain shell, not an insulated jacket.

To conclude this text about The North Face Venture jacket for men, this is just a rain shell, so you do not have insulation layers inside. But its design is such that you can always add a fleece jacket or a vest underneath, or even some down insulation layer. In such a way you can use the Venture jacket throughout the year. This is certainly what I do with my own rain jackets in Belgium where I live.
This is a good value for the price, the jacket will protect you from elements, and you will find it useful in everyday life and for light outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, and for not so hard hiking tours. It is breathable but do not expect too much from it, though the ventilation through the pit openings and mesh pockets is effective. But if the breathability is very important, for example, if you plan hard outdoor activities, see some other jackets described within this site.
Note that there exists Venture jacket for women as well, described within this site.
