Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX hiking boots for men are an excellent choice for any backpacking, and hiking trip. Durable and waterproof, these boots provide a great stability and traction regardless of the type of terrain.
Construction and materials
Quest 4D GTX are really lightweight boots that offer an excellent stability and comfort. Suede leather and synthetic are used for the upper part. The suede is a type of nubuck leather. The synthetic used here is a very lightweight and abrasion-resistant material. The collar of these boots is enormously comfortable and supportive. You can have some idea about this from the picture above.
The nicely padded and ergonomic tongue is gusseted almost to the top. Such a design protects you from debris entering the shoe. In the same time, this gives a very high flood height, so you will feel safe in crossing water streams.
GTX in the name of these boots stands for Gore-Tex. So the liner is waterproof, abrasion-resistant lining which allows for excellent drying and breathability. The combined leather-synthetic construction only adds to this effect and to the comfort which Salomon Quest 4D boots give.
But such a construction implies a lot of seams as you can see in the pictures, which are generally weak points of such a design with respect to its resistance to water.
Lacing is based on 6 metal eyelets plus one fabric eyelet, nice and sturdy design as you can see from the pictures.
The stability which these boots provide is excellent. Apart from the mentioned tall ankle support, this is due to Salomon’s 4D Advanced Chassis which performs great even on roughest terrains. This is what makes a difference when you compare Quest 4D GTX boots with others. The effect of fatigue is drastically reduced with these boots.
Inside: You have a footbed with an excellent and anatomic cushioning. This is a removable Salomon’s OrthoLite sock liner which combines a specific Ortholite foam, and an EVA heel cup which allows for a great heel support and cushioning.
Front and back: Here you have a nice protective toe cap (shown on the right) which I like to have in any mountaineering and backpacking shoes. A similar heel cap and a heel wrap provide an extra protection and stability for the rear of the foot, see the picture above.
Midsole and outsole: Here you have the mentioned Salomon’s 4D Advanced Chassis which runs all along the bottom. In addition, Salomon’s Contagrip outsole with such deep lugs provides an optimal traction on any terrain.
This is combined with a molded EVA midsole which adds an extra lightweight cushioning and stability.

Pros and cons

Salomon Quest 4D GTX hiking boots for women
There exists a version for women with exactly the same features and the only difference in size.
In conclusion to this review of Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX hiking boots for men, I wish to say that I simply love the design of these boots. Apart from the design, the strongest features of these boots are comfort, stability, and traction. I give them the same rate as to Vasque St Elias, both are the top class boots. But in the present case, Salomon would be my first choice.
