The letter R stands for reactive technology. On the lamp body, you have a white light lamp, the red light used in situations when you want to avoid disturbing people around you, and finally, the sensor which plays role in reactive behavior of the torch.
The sensor picks up the amount of light in the surroundings and uses this information to adjust the main light. For this, you have to set the torch to reactive lighting (see the table below).
The lamp has a port for micro USB port. It is possible to buy an adapter for triple-A batteries as well. There is a battery charge indicator.
The headband is made of a soft and comfortable material. Two point headband on the back.
The torch can be programmed, a free software is available to download at Petzl. With this, you can fine tune burn time and brightness according to your planned activity and to customize its performance.
Lighting features of Petzl Tikka R+ can be seen from this image from Petzl:
As you can see both modes (reactive and constant lighting) have 3 sub-modes. The reactive lighting has max autonomy, standard, and max power. Similarly, constant lighting offers proximity, movement, and rapid movement modes. All of them have characteristic burn times, 12 h, 6 h, and 3:30 h, respectively.
My rate for Tikka R+ is the same as the rate for Tikka RXP. My reasoning is as follows: R+ model is less expensive, the weight is the same for both models, and although the brightness of R+ is lower as compared to RXP (they are 170 and 215 for the two models), the burn time of R+ model is longer. It is in the range 3:30-12 hours, as compared to 2:30-10 in the case of RXP model.
Note that RXP and NAO are built on reactive technology while Ultra Rush and Ultra Rush Belt models have constant lighting. Thank you for reading, and please do leave some comment in the box below.
