In this Deuter Speed Lite 20 review I shall say a few words about a small pack, only about 1220 cubic inches (20 liters), and with the weight of 1 lb 3 oz (530 g).
In the Deuter site it is described as suitable for numerous activities, just see the list: hiking, climbing, biking, skiing, cross country skiing, city, running, traveling.
There exist even smaller packs from this series available, with 10 and 15 liters of volume.
Construction and materials
This is a small pack and yet it comes with a tensioned U-shaped frame wire. In spite of this, the pack can be rolled up and put into a larger backpack and used only as a summit pack or for some other similar purpose.
The back is a perforated breathable foam, and a similar material is used in the shoulder straps which are anatomically designed. There is a sternum strap that is height-adjustable.
The belt is very tiny, but you would not need much for such a small pack.
In fact this is good in particular if Speed Lite 20 is used as a climbing pack; in this case, you will have a completely free access to your climbing harness and the tools attached to it.
If this is not good enough, the belt is also detachable, and the same holds for the sternum strap.
The body is one compartment of course, and there is a zippered pocket with the access from the top.
Inside the main compartment, there is a sleeve for a water bladder, so this tiny pack is completely hydration compatible. The water pipe can be fixed to the shoulder strap.
The pack has a large stretch pocket on the front, and two side pockets as well.
There are 2 compression straps on both sides of the pack, very useful to attach some larger stuff like skis.
Observe that these compression straps can be reversed and connected with the straps from the other side of the pack.
This is suitable for fixing big elements of your equipment on the front of the pack, like skis or snowshoes.
You will notice this same clever design in the Osprey Kestrel 28 pack presented within this site.
A big loop is available on the bottom, for an ice axe or for trekking poles. The loop can be tucked away if not used, there is a small pocket for it.
There are also attachment loops for helmet holder.
- No rain cover.
