What this is about

So here you have the second series of tents built by the Klymit brand that is best known for its sleeping pads. They started with tents recently by launching their first-ever Maxfield series.

There are three tents in this Cross Canyon series, for 2, 3, and 4 people, you will see the numbers for all of them in the specifications below. They all share the same features, this is why I thought it would be appropriate to present them side by side.

You will see that the manufacturer describes these tents as freestanding, but strictly speaking, this applies only to the tent without the fly. The picture above shows the tent without the fly, so you realize this is a dome-style construction. 

However, the poles are pre-bent so the tent looks almost like a cabin-style tent. This gives much more shoulder-space inside. The structure is self-supporting when you attach the poles in the corners and hang the tent on the frame. In this state, you can move it around and rotate.

There are two large doors on the opposite sides, the picture below shows how the tent’s floor is used in the case of the 2-person version:

The tent comes with a full-coverage fly that creates two vestibules. They are with a central zipper so you have two flaps on each of them. To have vestibules fully functional, it is necessary to stake them properly, this is why the tent cannot be described as freestanding.  

Ventilation

The whole canopy is an ultra-fine mesh that will prevent all insects from getting in, but it allows the air to circulate in all directions. With the fly on, you can regulate the airflow by unzipping one of the flaps on vestibules. This is shown in the top picture above. The inner doors are deeply under the vestibules and they will remain protected.

But when you have your gear under the vestibules and have to keep everything closed because of the rain, you will rely on two roof vents. One of them is visible in the picture below, so you see it is with a Velcro stiffener that keeps it open. This together with the wide gap between the fly and the canopy should give enough air circulation to fight condensation. You cannot expect more from a tent of this type, this is all properly done.

Materials

The fabric: The mentioned mesh canopy is a 40D (denier) polyester, and the fly is a 68D polyester taffeta with a PU (polyurethane) coating that gives it an 1800 mm waterproof rating. The fly clips to the tent’s base in the corners. The floor is a bathtub-style 75D polyester with a 3000 mm PU coating.

The poles: You have aluminum poles that attach to the corners where you have the usual grommets. The attachment on the canopy is through clips.

Who is it for

Capacity-wise, you have already seen that the official capacity is for 2, 3, and 4 people, but if you want more space you can always downgrade this by one.

But the tents provide enough space per person, you will see the numbers below. For example, the Klymit Cross Canyon 2 tent offers a total of 46 ft² (4.3 m²) of the protected area in the inner tent and under the vestibules. This is 23 ft² (2.15 m²) per person. Very similar numbers per person are also for the Klymit Cross Canyon 3 and Klymit Cross Canyon 4 tents.

Weight-wise, the tents are in the group of moderately light. Take again the Klymit Cross Canyon 2 tent and you have around 1.1 m²/kg area/weight ratio. Similar values you will get for the other two tents.

Regarding the packed size, I would again describe these tents are moderately good, you will see my rating below. I do not think you would carry them on a longer trail, but this is possible. I see it better suited for people on their bicycle or motorbike adventures, and for car camping.

Regarding climate, seasons & best use, in view of the weight and packed size, these are the tents in between the true camping tents and trail tents.

The profile is aerodynamic and with such a fly they will perform great in windy places. Ventilation is optimal for such full-coverage tents, the waterproof rating is very good, the poles are high quality, so these are indeed tents for 3 seasons.

Regarding the price, this is a great value for the money.
